About a month ago, my brakes seemed to be losing pressure. The pedal was soft and braking is poor. I took it to a local mechanic and he bled the system and the pressure was better. He said he couldn't figure out how air got into the lines and found no leaks. He also felt that the front brakes were not working as well as they should. He suggested that I take it to a dealer and have the anti-lock system analyzed. Now a couple of weeks later the loss of pressure has returned. I really don't want to take my Discovery to the local dealer. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It’s a 1998 Discovery. I've never had the fluid replaced. Did have a rear caliper changed last year, but no flush. You don't think that it could be the master cylinder?

Having never stayed up with your maintance on the brakes is the first place to look. Anyone will tell you, you have to change the brake fluid every 20,000 to 30,000 miles or it becomes acidic, eats up your seals and becomes spongie.
Along with that, if you had to have the brakes bled, that is an indicator of a possible brake fluid leak.
Rovers also need to have their rubber brake hoses replace at 100,000 miles or you will also have a soft pedal.
So start with a full 2 quart DOT 4 brake flush after replacing your brake hoses.

Not that I am a brake guru, but I had the same problem. I was bleeding my brakes to get better pedal and my son pushed down a little to hard and the master cylinder gave out. I would do what Mike says and flush the lines its cheaper.
If the master cylinder is going out it most likely is letting fluid past and giving you a soft pedal. A new master cylinder is 250.00 to 300.00 E bay is a good place to start. I bought a used one from a auto wrecker in Sacramento they have a huge auto wrecking complex specializing in every car you can imagine.
I had to clean it up when I got it but I bought it through Pay Pal so it had a 30 day guarantee. I used my old reservoir because it was in better shape. With a good flush it fixed the problem.
