What are the under carriage weights for?

While I was in the process of installing my mud flaps, I noticed that there is some kind of mechanism just ahead of the bumper that looks like a swinging weight. There is one on each side of the vehicle, but I have no idea what it's for.

Could one of you fill me in?

Harmonic dampener. They help eliminate certain frequencies before they reach the cabin.

We talked about them about a year ago, so there should be a thread about it.
