Just curious, I am the proud new owner of a 97 SE7.
I am wondering its true towing capacity.

What is the heaviest load you have pulled?

What are the biggest constraints:

tongue weight?

pulling power?

braking?

Don't get me wrong, I am not going to do anything stupid, just maybe get a boat into the river 5 miles away.

The heaviest thing I have towed.

A 1500lbs trailer with 4500lbs of block on it... it wasn't fun, but I went slow. And no I didn't have trailer brakes. 45 miles.

I have towed my 4500lb wakeboard boat with a 1500lb twin axle trailer. My 97 disco did alright, but even with trailer brakes I could feel the boat manhandling my truck when comming to a stop. Otherwise, it towed slowly but surely. I loved looking at my two favorite toys together, but the rover wasn't too happy about it.

Are you guys using low range to start out then shifting to high like the manual says? Or just using high the whole time?

I was in high range the whole time... if you try to do the low high thing... have fun. You might not go anywhere....

I tow a 3500 pound boat all summer long. I hardly even feel it. The trailer does not have brakes. The only minor issues I have is going up some very long, steep hills near me. I usually have to drop to 3rd gear and chug up the hill at 35-40mph.

Of course, I'm in a manual transmission model, I'm sure that makes some difference.

I love the full time 4wd for pulling out at the launch (and the hand actuated e-brake, helps alot with the clutching)

I even had a double tire blow out on the trailer (at the same time) and It didn't cause us to go out of control.

7000 lbs

I've pushed the limits of my '96 Disco a little beyond where I should have but had no problems. I've towed a Range Rover Classic LWB (about 4500 lbs I guess) on a 20 ft long 2500 lbs trailer. I do have electric trailer brakes, however and a controller in the Disco. It's not a fun experience even with the electric brakes. Accross town its fine, but its tough to stay up to speed on the highway. I've driven a couple hundred miles this way and the drivetrain handled it well. I wouldn't make a regular habit of pulling that much but if you can get trailer brakes a disco will pull pretty safely. Without the brakes you'd need a mile and a half to stop and probably need to pads and rotors when you got home.

so if I understand everyone accurately... no one adheres to the 7000lb lowing capacity restriction in low gear. I tow some trailors with loads over 5000lbs & left it in high range. Does anyone tow a boat horse trailer etc & use low range? Just currious?

Dont worry about towing, I pull my boat out the water (Boat and a two wheeled trailer total load 2.5Ton) without problems in Low Gear, once out, I drive smoothly in H.
