What would it cost to fix this?

Hi again all,

I was looking at 2004 Discoveries on Ebay (yeah, I know) but I came across this one that has some front bumper damage. Please take a look and tell me what you think fixing this would cost. I think the hood is ok, it looks a little weird in one photo because reflection of person taking photo is in it.

I would certainly do more investigation. Carfax, etc. into this or any other vehicle before I consider buying.

Thanks, A.J.

Not a bad BIN price... I guess the question is do you want factory original parts, or aftermarket bumper?

For the price I would say go for it.

I think I'd prefer a factory bumper, what do you think that could run (parts and labor)? Do you think I could find one on internet somewhere, have it shipped and have local person put it on?

Where would I look to view after market type bumpers?

Thanks

You could probably get a used one for $50 and ship it for another $50.... so for lets say for $100 you could replace the bumper.

I gave away mine from my D1 when I built my own bumper.

After market... ARB, TJM, Rovertyme are just a couple..

If I bought this or another 2004 Discovery that has appro. 45,000 miles and still some factory warranty on it, would it make sense to have a dealer check it out for what could go wrong before warranty runs out? Once I get vehicle to where I live in Jackson Hole, WY it is over 4 hours to get to closest LR dealer (Salt Lake or Boise). I would be happy to make this trip to have them check things while still under warranty if you think it would be worth my while to do so.

Do people ever do that, take a vehicle to dealer just to go over well it while warranty still applies? Sorry if stupid question. Being a vehicle with just under 50,000 miles on it, what are the things that are most important for them to look at? What problems crop up on these vehicles at this milage range? (This is assuming I purchase a vehicle that has had one owner who has kept up all maintanence as scheduled, regular day to day driving history).

Thank you, A.J.

Normally the DD vehicles that have been well maintained have less issues, but keep in mind this is a Land Rover, and it has been put together completely by hand... this is not an automated robot built vehicle.

So with the above info I can say that I would get the VIN, call the local dealer to the vehicle and ask for a maintenance history. Most are willing to give this to you as a prospective buyer. If the vehicle has been in the shop once or twice a month, I wouldn't touch it... if it has been in the shop for recalls, normal maintenance and the occasional break fix... it should be a good deal and you shouldn't have any issues.

Now for the big question, can you work on your own stuff, or do you have a local mechanic that you trust. If so, then a Rover isn't much different than any other vehicle on the road, except that ABS codes can not be read by just any mechanic, they will need the Autologic or Testbook software to do the job correctly.

I haven't taken my 97 to the dealer for repairs since I bought it... that isn't to say that I haven't worked on it or taken to a local shop for some things... but the dealer, I just don't like spending $100 an hour for a mechanic.

Well, I do have a local mechanic who works on LR's and seems trustworthy- I would like to learn to as much as I can myself but I am a complete novice.

Could you please address this second part of what I asked before? I've copied it here:

"Do people ever do that, take a vehicle to dealer just to go over well it while warranty still applies? Sorry if stupid question. Being a vehicle with just UNDER 50,000 miles on it, what are the things that are most important for them to look at? What problems crop up on these vehicles at this milage range? (This is assuming I purchase a vehicle that has had one owner who has kept up all maintanence as scheduled, regular day to day driving history)."

Additionally, I read somewhere (have to find it again) that 2004 Discoverys need a specific comprehensive service interval at 50,000k mark. What does that all entail and would I be better off looking for a Disco that maybe has 55-65K on it but has had that service already done or find one that is less than 50K and LR dealer warranty on it??

I really appreciate your time and effort to answer my questions here, you are awesome!

Sorry I didn't answer the other question... Yes, I know of a lot of people (not personally, but via forums) that have taken a vehicle to the dealer for an inspection to insure nothing is major wrong with their future LR purchase... so nothing wrong with this at all, it will give you the piece of mind on a purchase. I would do this as well on a vehicle that I don't know very well.

Not sure of the major checks on a 2004 at 50k... I would presume things like transfer case oil and diff oil changes.. but not sure.

I found this online about maintenance... I called my dealer to ask about the 60,000 mile maintenance and it's considered a "major" maintenance that will cost approximately $750... not too bad considering all fluids in the vehicle are changed, as well as spark plugs...

That's some good information there...so should I buy an '04 around 55K that will need to have this done or an '04 around 60-65K that's already had it done? I guess it all really depends on the history of the vehicle purchase and whether previous owner has miticulously maintained all services as required by Land Rover up to what ever point the mileage is at.

So $750 to do the 60K check, does it matter if vehicle is still under warranty or not?

Of course if they find something else wrong while doing this regular maintanance, it would.

Thanks!
