Gang,

After searching around the web, I have been finding fragmented info about a work around for the LR4 transmission pan removal- one that does not involve removing the cross-member and other cumbersome components. So far I have come up with:

1. The plastic factory pan is loosened, and the filter neck is cut with a hacksaw for removal.

2. A shallower metal pan (possibly from an LR3) is swapped in with a removable filter.

Both a)the part numbers and b)the process have been elusive to nail down.

Since we are all getting up there in mileage, it would prove very beneficial if we could get all this info into a single thread- if we simplify this it will be much more attractive as a DIY project. I am not interested in a $90k Ford Explorer -I mean LR5-, so I plan on hanging on to this car for a long time and want to keep it well maintained.

Who's got some info on this?

Mike

I have also been trying to round up the details on this. So far, I think that the two transmissions ZF 6HP28 (LR4) and ZF 6HP26 (LR3) use the same pan, but we need to verify that.

I have seen mention of a metal pan made by a company "ALTO", but have no other information. I was planning to do some local research by talking to some local transmission shops and maybe a ford dealer, since I seem to remember people talking about using a FoMoCo part for the metal pan and buying it at a ford parts place.

I think this mod is totally doable with a little more info. I also think we could benefit from a little DIY on just changing the fluid without the pan/filter swap. I know on my infiniti it is much more straight forward, using the cooler line and filling in the trans dipstick filler thing, but we don't have that. Stupid sealed design.

For posterity, in case that page/product go away, im going to copy the text from http://www.britpart.com/parts/repai...rt-service-kits/discovery/discovery-4/da2142/

The fitting of this kit is far easier.
Degradation in oil can lead to judder, noise and a deterioration in gear change quality. ZF recommend oil and filter changes after 50,000 to 75,000 miles on all 5, 6 & 8 speed automatic gearboxes to ensure optimum performance.

This is an easy change filter conversion kit for all vehicles using the ZF 6HP26 automatic transmission - Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover L322 models. From the factory a fluid and filter change on this transmission is a very lengthy process. The sump and filter are normally one piece and fitting involves jacking the engine up and unbolting the mounts, plus the removal of the exhaust. The fitting of this kit is far easier. Once the fluid has been drained from the transmission simply remove the bolts from the old unit. Cut the old plastic sumps filter tube with a hacksaw. Slide the old sump out and remove the other end of the sawn off filter tube. The new separate filter can then be fitted and the new sump pan slides into place and is bolted up with the new gasket supplied. Once secure the transmission can be filled as per manufacturer’s instructions. The new sump pan also has the added benefit that it is manufactured in durable steel rather than the plastic of the original item - LR007474. 7ltrs needed for oil change.

Also note, the metal pan has no drain plug. I saw that comment on another forum also.

Okay, looks like we've got the parts nailed down..!

During this exercise, I have noticed a few different fluids come up:

1. Ravenol- About $10 a liter

2. Febi Bilstein LRN13754- About $11 a liter

3. Rowe Auto Trans Fluid ATF9006 - $12 a liter

3. ZF Lifeguard 6- twice the price of liquid platinum

Questions:
What spec are we intending to meet here?
Are any of these the stuff LR uses?
Do I need to be concerned about mixing fluids, as I think we are only going to get about 7 liters out this way?

I don't want to be cheap on the fluid, but that ZF had better be worth it to be 50-60% of the total parts cost.

I'm going to get the kit on order so we can get a write-up in the works. I think the path to victory is materializing..

Thanks again for all the info,

Mike

The FSM has a crazy amount of information on the transmission. I see that the fill plug has a special procedure, but its only because they use a special tool 307-452 on the plug, so they are compensating for the extra length of the tool. I think 35Nm is the torque spec they are going for.

The FSM does have step by step drain/fill procedure that just drains and fills without a filter change.
