If you want to drop $550 to have a 3rd party system interrupt the factory system that's a pretty steep cost...especially when you could just mount an iPad mini on the dash and share your internet from your phone and just use it via bluetooth. Any car I've driven with Android Auto/CarPlay/Hybrid has never impressed me especially the way they prevent certain apps from running (that drives me nuts!)

Congrats on the new ride!

I just read that CarPlay now supports (allows) Google Maps which is a big step forward and away from the walled garden approach that is the usual Apple way. That doesn't mean that the interface is any better than it was before but it may signal a start.

I also like the iPad idea. The old iPad minis fit almost perfectly in the space where the LR4 display currently lives but I have never wanted to completely lose access to some of those functions (rear view camera, 4x4 info, equalizer, etc.)

I wonder if there's a hinged mount that could fit it over the display that would let you flip it up to see the screen...or one that might slide to the side. Hmmm. Time to pull out the drawing board!

I should look at some Android tablets as well since the split screen on Android is awesome and would let you run maps + something next to it (Spotify, etc) I could handle covering the factory screen 99% of the time if it looked natural.

I guess we have the opposite opinion. I used to rent a lot of cars for work and it was just a flat out dream to get one with Apple's CarPlay. It gave a cheap ******* low-end Ford had a better UI than my LR4, and the navigation would actually be intuitive and usable. I'd love to have one in my Rover, but I don't think I'm willing to shell out a ton of dollars to do it.

Not sure you needed to f bomb the Ford on this one but I get where you're going. I drove two different carplay enabled 2017 cars last year and found the experience infuriating. If you run an app that isn't in carplay it bails out on the main screen in the car. The experience to get back to the radio is a mess. It didn't support Spotify (because Apple wants you to use their Apple Music)
Why not just get a mount and use your device as the main system? Are you really gaining that much by having carplay embedded vs. bluetooth? I think you're getting more if you don't have carplay because you can run all your apps on the phone vs. the limited ones that run on carplay. Especially now that you can pick up a 6.5" iPhone Xs+ you're almost at the same size as the built in screen with better resolution.
