I'm not really sure where to go at this point. Local LR dealer took my 2012 LR4 in for its final under warranty service on July 2.

The engine had been ticking for quite some time, and I had them look at the issue in January of 2016, 2017 and January of 2018. All three times it came back as "could not recreate" and they blamed it on the vehicle just being cold. In April/May of 2018, it was still making the noise, and it was no longer cold overnight. I made the call the last week of my warranty, and the first date they could take it in and give me a loaner vehicle was July 2.

They were finally able to recreate and it was the timing chain. They kept insisting that they were just waiting for the warranty approval to come in, since technically I was past my warranty, but I made the appointment within my warranty. It took about a month for them to get the approval, and then it took a couple weeks to get the parts. <--- All of this seems very fishy to me.

They finally brought the vehicle to me a few days ago. Upon receipt, there was a scratch on the driver side door, and the handle had a nick in it. There were cobwebs all over the vehicle. Even more alarming, though, was that the pollen from the spring was still all over the engine and engine cover. It looked like it hadn't even been touched. Many of the bolts were corroded, and it looks like none had been removed. Also, there is an "H" marked on the engine, which I can't recall ever being there, but I'm not 100% sure about this. My husband seems to think that this is "junk yard" markings. While the ticking seems to have been fixed, the actual shifter is incredibly stiff and clunky, not the smooth shifting that it had before going in.

Another issue was replacing the driver side windshield wiper mechanism. No less than 3 times has the driver wiper over turned and gone off the vehicle. Again, this has been "fixed" at least 2 times and now they were supposed to fix the stripped bolt. And again, this doesn't seem to have been touched upon return.

Also, not sure why the oil change mileage is 77k, when the vehicle has 68k. They changed the oil as part of the service, but did they drive it over 1500 miles?

I promptly called the dealer and told them to take it back. They insist all issues were fixed, but they will deal with the scratched door and handle. This was 3 days ago, and I haven't heard anything from them.

I called at least 2x per week all summer long. I'm not even sure what to do at this point or if there is anything that can be done. It's just getting VERY old not having my own vehicle.

Hmm... lots of corrosion on the motor. Where do you live? I am in Maine, and my 107K motor doesn't look that bad.
The only way to prove the engine is not the original, is to get LR to provide the original build sheet, that has the serial numbers of all of the components put in the LR4 at the time of the build. Not impossible, but most dealers will not provide it.
The diry and pollen is as expected from a vehicle that sat all summer. It would have been nice of the dealer to clean, but not compulsory.

Try to get the original build sheet, if you truly think the motor was not the original. None of the bolts look to have been removed, which is very suspicious in itself.

Thanks! We are in MA. Supposedly, the repairs were done mid-August. The fingerprints seen in the above photo were from us. I have "before" photos, too. I wish I had a "before" of the motor, but I didn't think to take one.

What do you think would cause the clunkiness of the shifter?

I agree with your husband about the junkyard markings, and that engine definitely looks like it has been sitting outside of a vehicle for quite some time. Sounds like an awesome dealer.

I agree with jaguardoc504, have the dealer provide the build sheet. Then you can check the engine serial number to determine if you have the original engine or a replacement. If a replacement, I would want to know where it came from and how many miles on it. If from a junkyard, that seems shady as usually dealers will only install OEM parts, even if it's an engine. If they sourced a rebuilt engine it would certainly look new on the outside and come with a warranty. I would contact Land Rover corporate in NJ and get them involved immediately to document your story in writing.

Not sure what MA dealer you went to. I know that Prime just bought LR Hanover and the transition is a ball of confusion. Maybe try a different dealer to get their opinion if the engine is original or not.

The wiper issue is either a loose nut with incorrect torque or if stripped, they may need to replace the entire wiper motor. The shifter may be stiff from sitting so long or require the shifter rebuild kit with is inexpensive. Or, when they pulled the engine they moved the transmission as well which changed the way the shifter feels.

We went to Herb Chambers Sudbury, since that is where it was purchased.

For the wiper, it's definitely stripped. They just refuse to replace the wiper motor.

Like I noted, start with LR corporate and ask them how to proceed. Make it clear that you called for the appointment while still under warranty but they could not get you in before it expired. That will be your biggest battle. The tell them you refuse to go back to LR Sudbury and want to go to LR Norwood to determine what is really going on here. (I've heard good things about them)

Yes, I just called LR corporate and started a case with them. Until I had my car back (or seen it since going in), I really had nothing to complain about except the lengthy repair. Everything they did was "no charge" and covered under warranty so far. They still have my car at this point, and I'm not sure that Norwood will give a loaner? Guess that will be a call today. I'm not very confident in this vehicle at the moment.

In all fairness to your vehicle, your lack of confidence is really a reflection of the dealership experience and how they may have botched the service. I'm glad you have a case started with LR corporate and I would go full steam ahead with that. Good luck and I think many of us would be interested in updates.

I would not be very confident either until I get the truth about the engine. Replacing the timing chain and chain guides is a very common issue on the 2012 LR4. It could take a couple of days as you have to pull off the front bumper to get at it, but not months. Maybe the tech installed it wrong and damaged the engine at start-up. Then you deserve a new or rebuilt LR engine, not a mystery junkyard engine.

The harder issue would be what to get if you trade-in the LR4. I just spent 3 days with a loaded $78K Discovery 5 loaner and it fails in so many ways as an LR4 replacement.
