Is the LR4 good for daily highway travel?

I’ve got a 2016 LR4 with 26k on it. I get between 15 and 21 mpg, measured. The 21 is on the Maine turnpike where it’s flat and fast. We love the car. It’s terrific to drive even in dense NYC traffic. It really is a joy to drive and I find myself smiling a lot when I’m doing that! The visibility is great and the height is a plus.
Overall, I think it’s the best and most fun vehicle I’ve owned since my MGA in 1960!
And despite being English it doesn’t leak oil!

Anyone have an estimation of how far you can go on a full tank?

On the V8 motor with Shell93 in D (no S) I get somewhere in the area of 285-290 to a tank which averages around 10mpg mixed driving. On the SCV6 it was somewhere around 300. Marginal and unnoticeable difference IMO. All highway with the same Shell93 V8 and in S mode it would be between 325-380 depending on how fast the average speed was on the trip. I am far from a gallon gazers and did not purchase this vehicle for any sort of MPG or fuel efficiency.

yeah, all HWY miles i get 285-300 miles going 80+mph. I let it go past empty by a few miles to get that though. AS the tank is 5 gallons bigger than the zero fuel measurement. I usually fill 19-20Gallons.

...regardless of the road or weather conditions. In fact, some of my most enjoyable driving has been at the wheel of my LR4s during really nasty weather.... in fact you will probably be looking for excuses to hit the road (paved or otherwise) once you have one.

Ditto :)

I think completely full to empty I get 22 gallons in the tank. I do not top-off unless in rural areas and in those case I always fill up whenever I see a gas station and I am less than a 1/4 tank. Never know how long it'll be until the next one.

The heft of the car in a relatively compact footprint makes it as stable as a freight train at high speeds, despite the brick-like aerodynamics you will always feel safe regardless of speed, even in fairly strong crosswinds. And you will absolutely love the command driving position to scan the road ahead for hazards, especially in heavy traffic... Watch your speedo as it is very easy to reach illegal speeds in a hurry in this vehicle, thanks to the strong engine and quiet interior.

The longer wheelbase soaks up most potholes and road imperfections with minimal fuss and keeps the ride smooth and serene for you and up to 6 passengers, they'll all have enough room and never feel claustrophobic on long trips.

I can think of few vehicles I'd rather be for highway cruising in than the LR4. The fact the same car is so capable when you get to your off-road destination is all gravy, and what makes most Land Rovers so special and unique in the automotive world.

Well said. All the key reason I have stuck to LR3/4 over the last twelve years.

I'm really close to pulling the trigger on on LR4. After test driving the vehicle I fell in love with it but was wondering if some of you could help me out here. I do a lot of highway travel every day and am wondering if this is the right vehicle for that type of travel. Is the LR4 a good choice vehicle for me? I realize that's a very broad question but is anyone using the vehicle for that type of travel on a daily basis?

LR3/4 is an excellent highway/freeway cruiser. I love the long drives and have been doing it for 28 some years with various cars/SUVs. But My 2006 LR3 HSE, then 2013 V8, and now 2016.5 SCV6 Landmark have by far been the most pleasurable, solid, safe, and stable vehicles out of everything that I have ever owned, driven or have been driven in.

I made my move from NY to LA in my 06 LR3, and basically had this grin on my face pretty much all the way thru those 3500 or so miles :) I remember the drive and the rig being so much fun, smooth, and safe. And this was on not so good stock goodyears as I didn't even know about the tires and their effect on the ride quality that much back in the day.

All that heft, the IBF (world's only one), near 6k pounds, and the lower center of gravity contributes to that safe and sound, being inside an insulated tank feeling. And, no matter how cushy and luxurious the ride maybe, that feeling is not available even on the flagship RR (past or present) simply due to lack of IBF.

A couple of years ago, me and a bunch of friends (total five of us) went on a long drive in my '13 V8 hitting various freeways and highways. And I remember one of my, critical-on-everything friend, sitting on the second row left seat (right behind the driver, me) told me that he had sat in many SUVs in the past and that he had stayed away from purchasing an SUV as his daily driver because of the not so comfortable ride quality compared to his sedan(s) but this had been by far the smoothest ride he had ever had or felt in an SUV. And he was practically sitting right obove the left-rear wheel :)

All this despite LR' apparent attempts to slightly detune and de-luxurise the LR3/4 (whether its sound proofing or insulation material's quality and quantity) in order to maintain its distance from its flagship model.

Keep in mind that LR3, at least in my personal experience of six years of ownership before moving to '13 LR4, has a softer suspension setup so even with ****** rubber, the truck rides pretty smooth and floats over small frequent bumps.

LR4 on the other hand has a firmer suspension setup and therefore the tires you choose have quite a bit of impact on the ride quality, and I learned that first hand recently with my '16 landmark by moving from the stock 20"/Prellis to 19"/contact 4x4 to now 19"/TerrainContacts.

What I refer to as our little secret...and what allows us to have a legit luxury off-roader at an attainable price (relatively speaking). RR can have all the bling, IMO. This is also why I envy the LR3 in many respects over the LR4, for that matter.
