My dealer just quoted @600 bucks to replace and synchronized a new key fob!

Please tell me there is a cheaper alternative!

Dumb question, but did you pop open the FOB and replace the battery yet

For that money, buy the GAP IID tool and a $30 fob off amazon. Then you can program as many key fobs as you want and have all the other GAP tool features as a bonus.

I lost the spare set so while the battery may be dead, that’s not really the most pressing issue :)

I recently got the gap tool, but haven’t even used it yet. Tell me about making fobs and what to buy ! Any other suggestions for the tool would be welcome. I planned to just use it to raise the default ride height a bit when I go to the Mojave next month.

You can buy a used fob off eBay and use the GAP tool to reprogram it work with your truck. Make sure it's the same type as your existing one.

HOWEVER: You will need to buy the metal key separately, either from the dealer ($70, IIRC?), or buy a blank off eBay and have a local locksmith copy your existing one (~$35)- assuming it isn't lost.

Also, the used/reprogrammed fob will only work with good batteries in it. If the fob batteries are dead, you can't hold it under the dash to start the engine like you can with new/dealer-sourced fobs.

I would also recommend using the GAP tool. I programmed four keys a few months ago because I got down to one and was a little nervous.

One thing I might add is that you can use the Range Rover sport key if it is for an LR4. That is currently what I am using for my LR4 now as it is just so much smaller and more convenient than the larger LR4 key.

This is the link to one of the keys I bought. I wish it didn't say RR, but beggars cant be choosers.

Thanks for all of the input
I am on the fence, I really would not want to be in the middle of the Mojave and have an issue with a cloned fob.....but paying six hundred bucks for a new key has me feeling physically ill. :).

IIRC, my local dealer only wanted ~$300... can you try a different dealership?

The GAP tool does not "clone" the spare/used fob. It simply reads the signal transmitted and tells the locking system to allow that fob to work with your truck. As mentioned before, you still need to get the metal key AND make sure you have good batteries in the fob.
