Stock LR4 and 275 55 20s - the results!!

So I have posted a few times on here about trying to upgrade the stock tire size. I first looked at 18in wheels and settling on 265 65 18s and then started exploring 20in sizes. I came across a set of 20 inch rims from a 2012 range Rover supercharged and ended up buying them because the price was too good to pass up. After reading countless threads on multiple forums about the largest tire size in 20in diameter, I zeroed in on the 275 55 20 size. A couple of reasons for this: first, this size gets me more sidewall than factory, which was a primary requirement. Also, there are a good selection of tires available in this size in D and E load ratings(in addition to XL), which is important for a truck this heavy. Finally, figured if it ended up not working out, I could always resell the wheels and stick to my original 18 plan. Another requirement was not to mess with any lift rods and to avoid putting in spacers if I could get away with it. So, today I mounted these tires and I am happy to report that they fit great and there is no rubbing, lock to lock. The details are below and I am posting some pictures. Very happy to be another data point in the quest for larger wheels/tires for these trucks.

Wheels: 20x8.5 et58 Range Rover Supercharged 10 spoke

Tires: Yokohama Geolandar a/t G015 275 55 20 117H XL. I had these tires on my old truck and really liked them. They have the snowflake symbol on them so are very decent in the snow.

Again, my LR4 is stock with no lift rods, spacers or any other suspension mods. The fit is close, so if you have wheels with different offset(or a chunkier a/t tire like a k02), it might rub. This wheel/tire combination does not. This is a 31.9inch diameter so the common wisdom of anything over a 31.5inch diameter needing rods or other mods is false. Overall, I am very happy with the result and the truck drives great. Hope this helps someone in their quest for bigger wheels/tires.

Thanks for the report and pics.

I’ve read that others with the same size have experienced slight rubbing and and knowing how different some tire tread width and sections can be it’s sounds like you’ve got an optimum setup.

No trouble mounting the spare I presume?

Thanks! Good point about the spare - I only got 4 wheels so still need to find a 5th wheel and mount a cheap tire on it. I have been told that the spare needs to be deflated to fit.

On another note, I now need to get rid of 5 19inch factory LR4 wheels....

Looks great . You may want to slam the suspension to check that it still clears when bottomed out.

I briefly put it in access mode and drove around and it wasn't rubbing. Didn't test it extensively. I don't ever use access mode but still, good to know!

Great post ! Thanks for the info. Im looking to do exactly the same on my 2013 LR4. Ive been looking into oem LR/RR wheels and wondering what the ideal size would be. I found a nice set of 275 40 20 but you think 40 isnt enough side wall especially given the crappy streets here in Chicago.

I wanted as much sidewall as humanly possible on 20 inch rims, without resorting to any lift rods or spacers. These give me .5 inch more than my stock tires, which is not much more but it's something. If you are dealing with potholes, I'd get more sidewall than a 40 aspect ratio can provide in that width. Also, that size tire overall diameter is smaller than factory, which doesn't make much sense. Just my 2c.

I live in downtown Philadelphia, and I'm pretty sure my tires and suspension take more abuse in one week than most LR's in the nation take in a year. Even those owned by avid off-road weekenders. Every single day is non-stop abuse. Potholes, sinkholes, uneven pavement, cobblestone streets, trolley and train tracks with huge gaps in the asphalt on either side ... this city's streets are a disaster (though they're in line with what I've experienced in NYC and Chicago, amongst others).

OP, so suspension in normal mode in those pics? Give us a detailed access height report when you can! Turn it lock to lock. I use it all the time in parking garages, etc.

No problem. Here are some pics with it in access mode. Now that I retested it, there is very faint rubbing in access mode when doing tight left turns. It's barely noticeable but it sounds like the top of the tread is making contact with the frame horn. Very faint, all noise and no vibration felt through steering wheel. I imagine as the tire wears, this will disappear. Normal height, there is no rubbing. All the pics are in access mode. Hope this helps!!
