Hi all,

I've seen old threads with mixed reviews on whether or not the oil can be sucked out of the LR3's dipstick hole by a Mityvac or equivalent extraction system....has anyone successfully done this? By successful I mean all 8 quarts or close to it....Thanks in advance.

Is the goal avoiding a buggered drain plug?
Not being under the vehicle?
Not dropping the skid plate?

If you can get most oil out with a mityvac, you could just change more often so the residual mix diluted quicker.
But you still have to get underneath to change the filter, so I am not sure I understand the benefit of oil extraction vs draining.

Can you explain what your perceived benefit would be in your case?

I have the stock skid and don't mind going under for a traditional change.
It also gives me the chance to look around at many wear items that typically go unnoticed until you actively inspect.

Doug, my drain plug is compromised.

@jaamrode how much could you extract?
What if the vehicle were inclined?
Did you "hit bottom" with your hose?

Not sure....the PO put in an oversized plug. I am not sure if he had the hole drilled out and if so, by how much. If it's not bad, the dealer has a TIMESERT kit they can use.

I'd think the hole would have to be drilled, right? Wouldn't an oversized plug just cross-thread or something?

So I'm just being neurotic and anticipating the worst, which is the TIMESERT not fitting.

Oversize doesn't cross-thread (unless the wrong one was used)
They just cut a little deeper in the existing thread

Time-sert or Helicoil should work - give it a shot

I know shavings aren't ideal near oil, but could you tap new threads and go up a full metric size?

Absolute worst case - is a pan replacement out of the question?

Thanks Doug....that is encouraging. I think the LR TIMESERT kit will work....I doubt the PO went any bigger than necessary. I would be concerned about shavings, yes....a pan replacement is like $3000 installed. Hell I only paid $4700 for this LR3!

I solved this problem on my '05 in a different way. Had a hole tapped into an OEM drain plug then fitted a 90 degree (elbow) stainless steel pipe fitting with a cap on it, to the plug. Then JB Welded the plug in; used Locktite on the elbow fitting....and just unscrew the little cap to let oil drain out. It's a smaller hole so I gotta get that oil nice 'n hot, but it works!

have you gotten a 2nd or 3rd opinion/confirmation for the labor involved?

Abran or LR Techniker (other forum?) are fair and knowledgable about procedures

Well, I'd say the time-sert is your way to go.

After reading up a bit on it, looks like you will have to drill and tap the threads for the insert

Not sure how this will be different in the end just simply cleaning up the threads for a "next size up" plug. Both will create shavings?

My most trusted Tech up here says that's not always the case. Fingers crossed but if we have to drill we have to drill.
