99 Disco II

Hey folks. I have a dash light thats out unless you hit the brake pedal... or put the right directional on.

When you turn the directional on the dash lights blink with the light...however if you hit the brake while the directional is on...the dash blinks the opposite of the directional.

It is also effecting the right rear tail light.

I have tried a new bulb in the tail light. I even swapped the metal casing thing that the bulb plugs into with a known good one on a friends truck.

There is obviously a short somewhere... but not sure where to start. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Kris...aka...Drunken Monkey.

Sounds like it could be a bad turn signal stalk, or the connector that connects to the stalk... check for any burnt wires, if none, then change the stalk. Easy.

Joey is correct - I had a similar problem on my Disco I (1997 SE7) and it turned out to be the harness connector right at the turn-signal wand/stalk on your steering column. In my case, the previous wand had aged and was getting difficult to switch - but it still worked - then one day, ****, a little cloud of smoke emmitted from it's place on the steering column and no more wand switch! The connectors had got a little scorched in the process and this was where my conection problem with rear lights and dash lights started; I cleaned the connectors thoroughly - and the problem has gone away.

I'll check that when I get home on Friday.

The stalk would take out my dash lights and passenger tail light as well?

And yes... I already checked Fuse 8. The one under the hood and under the dash.

Yea...I love everything about my truck EXCEPT the electronics.

I do appreciate the help guys. Hopefully you're right.

Absolutely. Just seemed weird that only one side would be affected. I'm not saying I thought you were wrong. Just seemed odd. But then again... most electrical stuff on these trucks seems odd :).

I'll pull the stalk on Friday. I'm hoping you guys are right. This problem has been driving me crazy.

Well, in my case, with an identical problem, - new wand/stalk and don't forget to clean those contacts in the wiring harness!
