I just got off the phone with the LR dealer, to schedule the front brake job. Rears are done. He said that they only replace the rotors, and won't turn them? Is this BS? Would it hurt the vehicle to turn them?

Thanks.

Pretty much standard at most dealers these days, even if they measure the thickness and find there is room for machining. Turning the rotors will make them more susceptible to overheating and warping, especially on this vehicle. It's always better to install new rotors when replacing brake linings if you can swing it. Although the costs are pre-set based on specific parts and set labor hours times rate, I think most dealers and shops overcharge for brakes these days. ie. they can complete the job much more quickly than the book time says and they charge full list price on parts. I have a number of clients that own service shops and they pretty much acknowledge this. In my view, a very reasonable DIY job if have have basic mechanical skills and the proper tools. You can buy oem parts at a discount online and save significantly.

The dealer is correct for 2 reasons, the rotors are to thin when new to resurface and the alloy that is used in the factory rotors is too soft and doesn't resurface right.
That being said, why are you letting a dealer do this easy job and charge you so much, do them your self.

I'll look into DIY. I have the tools, and I've done a brake job or two back in the day. Is there anything that makes the LR3 harder to do? IE any computer adjustments?

Does anyone have the part #'s for the pads and rotors? Where is a good place to buy from?

Thanks

Brakes on the LR3 are relatively easy to do, and not much different than any other car. Atlantic British is a great place to get OEM parts, or aftermarket. They sell whole kits with everything you need. I have ordered from them before with great results. (Actually, there was a mess up on my brake kit order and they only sent two fo the four rotors in the order. Get this. . . Without me even asking nor suggesting a thing, they fell over themselves to make it right, and Fed Ex'ed next day delivery to me the missing two rotors. That had to cost a ton. . .)

Fairly straightforward job; plugging in the sensors (if you've tripped 'em, you need new ones), is a bit of a pain, but otherwise it's relatively straightforward. Did it last week - saved ~$700 over going to the local stealership, and could have saved a heck of a lot more if I'd been patient enough for Atlantic British (I'm in Canada, and wanted parts in a hurry)....
