I searched around this forum to find out how to tell if an LR4 has an HD Package or not. Somebody mentioned Topix in a thread or two, but not much else, and the comment seemed to go ignored. I tried it and it works.

For anyone who stumbles on this thread via a search, here is what I have found to work. Please keep in mind that I was checking 2010 - 2013 LR4's. Not sure if this shows different for 2014 and beyond. Maybe somebody shopping those model years can add to the thread.

1 - Register for Topix at http://www.landrovertechinfo.com and finalize the process with the confirmation email.

2 - Get the VIN of the Vehicle you are looking at, login to Topix

3 - Enter the VIN on the left. There are little boxes to type into, but you can paste a VIN number and it will fill it out just fine.

4 - In the "Vehicle Features" box, click the little set of horizontal lines next to the printer icon.

5 - A window will pop up. An LR4 with a Locking Diff will show:

LOCKING REAR AXLE - E DIFF

An open diff will show:

OPEN STYLE REAR AXLE-STD DIFF

Enjoy!

HD or Not

pearsth; I tried what you found and did not see the line next to the printer icon. Here is what I get:

Vehicle Features
Drive LHD
Engine 4.4L V8 Petrol
CAB style 4 DOOR ESTATE
Air conditioning ATC/HIGH OUTPUT AC
Transmission 6-Speed Automatic 6HP26

I do have an LR3 with the locking rear differential. Does that make it an HD?

Thanks

Just hit the printer icon to see all the specs. Didn't try that until now.

I have not researched LR3's to know what they called them with a rear diff lock.

One simple way on the LR4 is to look and see if you have a full size spare on an alloy wheel. In 2013 at least, that was only included on the versions with the HD package, including the locker diff.

I saw that in other threads. Problem is that when shopping online, you don't have a way to look under the car.

I was trying to find a white LR4 with HD and looked at every one between 2011 and 2013 online (cars.com, carmax, autotrader, Land Rover Web site) and didn't find a single one. Lots of VIN cut and paste into TOPIx!

Gents,
Somebody please educate me, as I am but a Land Rover tadpole, but isn't the Terrain Response the easy give away on that? I was under the impression that a LR4 equipped with the HD Package would have "Rock Crawl" mode as a setting but a LR4 without the HD Package would not have that particular setting. Has it always been so or is that a new development? Is it just me or does a Land Rover without locking differentials seem a little sacrilegious kind of like non-alcoholic beer, decaf coffee, well done steaks, and a flat ******* waitress? A full size spare is an easy peek but it seems to me that's not a very reliable gauge for what a vehicle is truly equipped with.

2011 lr4 without locking diff

I do some moderate off roading mud and snow. Not an issue, the traction control system works very well. I'm sure if you went on a long journey up a gravel mountain your brakes would get hot and excess wear but for 99% of off road adventures I think it's just fine. (brakes act as locking diff)

I would have preferred it, but couldn't find an HD with the color scheme we wanted. As mentioned already go under the car look and see 2 thinks full size spare tire and there should be an electric motor with wires coming out of the rear differential. Just changed my diff fluid and verified my small tire and no wires :(

But decaf coffee and non-alcoholic beer I think not
