OK this repair seems complete. Went and picked it up today - so it looks like the timing chain guide broke which started the 'chain' reaction. Drove 50 miles so far and is smooth. Glad I did other parts as well. Here are some pics of the parts and what the truck looks like (off of a flatbed). Ever the pioneer, the techs said this is the first they have seen of the 3.0 breaking a camshaft (if you're not first you're last).

This is the reason I would not buy a used LR4 from a dealer or other used car business.

This is why I would only ever buy an LR4 or used Land Rover product from a Land Rover dealer with an extended warranty:)

The days of buying a LR4 with a Land Rover backed warranty are rapidly coming to an end so no used Land Rover LR4 for you! Vehicles with issues get traded in. If and when my LR4 starts to make timing chain noises it will be traded in.. The dealer as the vehicle expert will low ball me and I still come out ahead. If I was selling privately it would be full disclosure.

@ktm525 The dealer specifically stated that no aftermarket warranty was available from them. I thought that was odd thinking that it would be offered but likely expensive. Expensive is now a relative term... It never feels good to pay this much in one fell swoop but the indy shop that did the repair will warrant the work so there is that. I would like to think in addition to the timing chain, water pump, newer head and all of the other incidentals that I have staved off other 2-3K jobs (for a while)... I will browse some of the other threads about aftermarket warranties and see if I can figure out if there is any value to be had at this point since there are certainly other systems on this rig that could be pricey to replace.

Update: about 1,000 miles since repair and truck runs good. I just ran BG44K through one tank of gas for good measure. One thing I noticed since picking it up is a rattle around the mid-engine low. Not consistent and only when in gear and not at idle while revving. I was able to get it back to the indy shop and he through it up on the hoist and we noticed a plate cracked by the transmission. I have a welder and when it warms up this weekend can tack it together. Question... are there any better aftermarket armor plates that would take the place of this to add a bit more strength? Also, what would one call this part?

OK so 3,000 miles into the left side of the motor rebuild and I think I have a head gasket on the fritz. Since I got the truck back in late December I have noticed every week or so that I had to top the coolant reservoir off but no visible leaks under the truck. Over the last few days, I am seeing some white smoke out the exhaust that smells pungent. I have only driven this short distances waiting to get 5,000 trouble-free miles before I trust it on a longer trip - which might be a pipe dream. It's running smoothly and not overheating but I think something is not well.

Anything else it could be? I had trouble with the video but here is a photo after it sits and I start it - seems to diminish after a couple of minutes but it's fairly smokey.

I'd take a look at the oil to see if you have coolant in it. That exhaust plume looks like coolant getting somewhere it shouldn't be. Might be wrong, but doesn't look good.

Just to be sure, check down in the valley behind the crossover pipes for any signs of coolant. You never know if one of those o rings wasn't seated properly.
