Change of battery - does the ECU definately need to be reset?

Hi all

After recently experienced a non-starting issue, I installed a new AGM-H8 battery yesterday.

Still experienced issues getting her to start reliably and decided to call it a night and hit the forums do some more online research. I came to the conclusion (maybe) that the ECU needs to be reset.

Just for ***** and giggles, thought I'd give her another crack this morning and low and behold she started four times in a row with absolutely no issue.... which is great, but doesn't give me that warm fuzzy feeling to drive her out of the driveway for fear of getting stranded somewhere.

So it is an absolute requirement to reset the ECU when changing battery?

I can't directly answer your question but I'll offer up my experience. I just swapped in new battery and I did not reset my ECU. I've also disconnected my previous battery a few times and did not reset.

I changed my battery 2 years ago and never reset the ECU, I didn't own a gap tool at the time. I figured I would do it on the next one but I've been trying to periodically top off my battery with a battery tender so hopefully that isn't for awhile!

I have three rovers, in Vegas the summer heat just destroys batteries and I average 2-3 years at best. I have never had the cars computer reprogrammed BUT I always replace with the same style batteries just different brands and have had zero issues including one alternator. I believe if you switch from agm? to standard type batterie then you may have to change the charging values. The smart folks will chime in soon...

Have done reset and not done reset on various battery changes/disconnects.

I have never noticed a difference.

I have an LR$ and can confirm that there is no reset required. I have had the odd time when it wouldn't start and was told to disconnect the battery then reconnect as that resets the system. Mine is now 10 years old and have owned it 7 years with 105 K on the clock and it is the best vehicle I have ever owned or driven. I will add that I have been driving 65 years and am 82 now.

Hope that gives you confidence.

I forgot to add that I use a non Dealer garage owned and run by 2 LR trained technicians who know what they are doing which is more than I can say for my local LR Dealer, Listers

G'day mrlifter, good to hear a guy older than me (71) is still enjoying his D4. I agree totally with your comments re "best ever owned or driven". My 2014 D4 bought new replaced a 1995 300Tdi Disco which
gave us nearly 20 years of terrific adventuring. The current vehicle is a huge step up in ride quality,
important at our age. The 8 speed auto is nice to have after the 5 speed manual. With all the aftermarket
gear I've had fitted it is a brilliant long-range offroader. I'm keeping it as long as I can keep driving. My
battery is now almost 6 years old & still going strong - fingers crossed it lasts until the current covid-19
nightmare ends & I can drive outside the city again - we're in lockdown for a few more weeks yet at least.

Does the reset apply to the Eco Start Stop battery ?
