1996 - Recharging A/C..help needed.---> Fixed it!!!!

My wife has a 1996 Range Rover P38 that's blowing warm air and the compressor IS working.

I consider myself a pretty handy 'shade tree' kinda guy and would like to try to recharge the system myself, but i've NEVER done any kind of A/C work on any of our vehicles... ever.

I've read up on what I could find on the topic, but still i'm uncertain about the process. I'm pretty sure I'll need to buy a guage and a can or two of 134a (at autozone), but I haven't got a clue from this point on. IE, where to hook it up in the enging compartment and what to do.

Buy one of the large cans of 134, with a gauge, read the instructions and you'll be set, it is an easy fix.

Well I did what you said Mike and followed the instructions on the can. Apparently my problem isn't with the 134a charge because it's right where it should be, (35-40 @70 degrees ambient temp.)

Ac blowing COLD air once again..---->FIXED IT!!

Well after researching the web for an answer as to why the ac would blow cold air then warm after about 15 minutes or so. Here's what I found:

Apparently over time there can be insufficient voltage to the magnetic compressor clutch, because the disk and pulley gap increases and makes it harder or impossible for it to bridge the larger gap. There is an officicial landrover fix for this, but a quick fix was discovered.

You can remove the shim washer from behind the disk and flexure plate to reduce the gap. I've read the gap shouldn't be more than .8mm (mine was).

So I did what I mentioned above and Voila, my wife has cold air once again.

More than likely this solution has been talked about before here on this site, but I couldn't find it. So I decided to post this for anyone who may have a similiar issue.

I'd post the site where I found this quick fix, but i'm not sure i'm allowed to.:hello:

Oh and by the way; In my OP I stated the compressor was working. Well it did for a short while upon initial start up, but then it stopped working after about 15 minutes or so.

Sorry for the edit's...
