Hello - I have a 1999 Range Rover that had an engine replaced under
warranty almost 3 years ago. The new engine has about 20k miles on it
now and about 3-4 weeks ago we started to notice a ticking/tapping
noise at idle. It drives just fine and you can only hear the noise when
you are not in the car or the window is down at a drive-thru etc. Any
ideas as to what this could be? Our mechanic friend in Virginia says
that the valves are hydraulic, so there is no adjusting them. That it
could possibly be a bad lifter? It does not do it when you first crank
it up - when the engine is cold, but always does it at idle when it is
warm. It seems to cycle a bit - louder amd softer and then not at all.
Any ideas or insigt would be greatly appreciated! It seems that every
time we take it to the dealer they just screw it up and there is no
where close by to take it. Also, anybody had problems with filling
these up with gas? It really is a drag when it is -10 degrees outside
and you have to keep wrestling with the gas pump because it keeps
clicking off. This is our 6th Land Rover and we love them, but have had
the fuel problem on 2 of them now. Any suggestions or advice to either
problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!!!!

Try adding Lucas oil stabalizer in with the next oil change, and check your plug wires. My 1995 RR was tapping load until I installed new plugs and wires. Also try adding a fuel additive for cold weather to the tank. All of these ideas will help in keeping your engine running for a long time...

Fueling is pain in the *** with my car also, burps and spits very easily.
Usually i can´t get it filled up before pump timed out...

No matter how you i keep pistol, it is worst when fueling from partly empty tank.If it is really low, then it accepts fuel better.

I am planning to take fillling tubes out, and look if there is some glogged or restricted line somewhere, or some valve which is stuck. Need to replace that rubber hose between tank-filling tube before it starts to leak, it have cracks on it.

What type oil are you running in you RR?

You could have a clogged pick up tube in the oil pan, or the oil is just to think causing the valves to tap.

Could also be an exhaust leak. Check for a cracked exhaust manifold.

Fueling issue would be a clogged vent line. Have it replaced would be one way to fix it, I have also heard you can clean them, but have never done it.

My experience, these valves just tap. Nothing to worry about.
Re fillups: Mine accepts gas better when i pull the nozzle out about 1/2 way.

I know my 4.0 Rover engine with 121,000 miles on it, it only taps on startup which is due to a clogging pickup tube. This started about 4,000 miles ago, and I plan to fix as soon as I can get in my garage.... (pity party - wife sells home interior and has my garage full)
