Todd,

I'm glad I was able to help in some small way.

I really hope I don't jinx myself by saying this, but so far there haven't been any side effects with the diff change. Of course, I haven't had a chance to take it out and put the TR in a mode that might actually cause locking of the diff yet, but I will and I feel confident that it will be just fine. Plus, the diff is INFINITELY locking anyway, which means that it acts as a locker all the time, the display just doesn't show it as such (although it could) because in the general setting, it doesn't lock as frequently so the 4x4 info screen does not show it as green because there is such a low likelihood of it turning Red...or something like that! This is close to what was explained to me, my memory fades; anyway and explains how this could've happened on pavement in the general setting.

I don't think you have much to worry about.

Houm,

the same thing you described happen to me yesterday, with one difference. My car lowered to the access mode, but the 4X4 display and the dash display both indicated that it was in normal mode. If you looked at the axle position on the 4X4 display, you could see that is was down. To get it back to normal I had to put it in off-road mode and than back to normal.

I also have the HD package. At the time this fault occured I had the TRS setting to normal. I did not think that the differentals would try to lock in the normal mode.

this is the first time I have had a fault occur while driving, all others have been at startup

Thanks

Chilkoot, this sounds more like a suspension issue than a diff issue....can you tell me exactly which warning/fault lights were illuminated?

Here are the message and faults that I got last week.

The message center displayed:
Transmission fault Stop Safely
HDC fault system not available

At the same time i got the following steady amber warning lights:
DSC
Suspension
antilock brake
BRAKE

I Was driving along in normal TRS and standard height when all of these came on. When I stoped the truck, I noticed that the car was not at the normal height, but the 4X4 display said it was normal, but the axel display indicated that it was down. I restarted the truck, and all the faults went away, but the truck stayed in the low position. I raised it up to off-road height, and then back to normal height, and all was well.

Any thoughts on what would cause this???

Thanks

Chilkoot

I had the same thing, turned out to be a parking brake switch was stuck. At least that is what the dealer told me.

....

Had all those, not sure about the leveling issue. Also went away, but two weeks later (as noted above) when I brought my truck in I let them know, they looked up the codes, and ordered me a new rear diff.

Haven't seen it again since, but am waiting for my backordered diff all the same.

I wouldn't panic, but I wouldn't take it on any safaris until you bring it in and have LR look at the codes.

Chilkoot, the suspension warning light sounds consistent with the diff-lock problem. My suspension light came on too, but the service rep described it as the ARM light....I think that those systems "share" that light. My suspension was working fine when mine failed, but I noticed that light as well...mostly 'cause I'd just gotten a suspension fault fixed so I was all too familiar with that warning light. However, when I exceeded 30 mph that morning, no warnings alerted me to slow down, so I'm pretty sure that it was not in fact a suspension fault and indeed was from the ARM.

I'd bet a beer...scratch that, I'd bet a case of Bridgeport IPA that you have a defective rear diff causing those faults. That combo can't just be a coincidence. My message center said those same things, too. I'd take it in and have the dealer read any residual fault codes. Certainly, if it happens again take it in as-is and make them plug it in and get the fault info.

Best of luck.

Houm et al,

Well, I've lamented the fact that I've been plagued with suspension faults but always had the satisfaction of knowing that I hadn't experienced the diff-lock symptoms.......until today! Bummer. Christmas tree warning lights, messages "HDC unavailable", Transmission fault, etc. Gone now, after a reset, but sounds like the rear diff prob to me. Will notify the dealer to have the part in stock, she's coming back in. btw, the only thing that may have triggered it was that I had parked in a hurry with a rear tire off the ground about a half-hour earlier?

Dawg, mine was triggered by....NOTHING. So, don't break your neck looking for a reason it happened or a trigger. Take solice in the fact that you know what it is, it's a relatively quick fix, it's a known error and one that has been cured and not a gremlin, and, it's free (except for your time).

Houm,

You're right, you'd think I'd be happy to finally have an LR3 issue with a known fix. Perhaps things are looking up!
