Under the hood of my DSII mounted on the firewall passenger side there is a small electric motor that recently started making a heck of a racket. It only lasts a minute or so and only seems to happen after the car sits overnight.

Can anyone tell me what this motor is for and if there are any known issues with it. I assume I will be replacing it shortly when it fails and need to know what system it will take with it when it does.

Thanks in advance.

If you have SLS, I would say the air pump.

Is it corect to assume that if I did have SLS I would have air bags or air shocks at all 4 corners ?

You would have air shocks just on the rear... you would also have an SLS switch in the area of the center dash (can't remember where) it will indicate up/down to manually adjust the rear air bags.

Ok, I have confirmed there is no SRS button on this DSII and the rear shocks do not have any air hoses. I took another look at the electric motor under the hood and there is a 5/8 inch aluminum hose coming out of it running along the firewall behind the engine. Perhaps it is emissions related?

I have a pump on the right side of my firewall that is a cold start emissions pump. It runs for a few minutes when the engine is cold. Supposed to reduce cold air emissions when the cats are cold.

It's the SAI or Secondary Air Injection pump. It is to inject air into the Cat when the engine is cold to help the Cat 'fire' (get hot) and reduce emissions.
Mine on my 2000 with 90k miles just started this problem also. I plan to pull it and clean the air cleaner element (foam, I think). I also just replaced the spark plugs, and have developed a miss which is getting worse. I don't know if these problems are related.
I bought the Land Rover Workshop Manual for mine, expensive but I highly recommend it if you do your own work and plan to keep it a while.
Good luck, will report when I get mine fixed.
