Could somone please let me know if there is a way to check the possibility of near future head gasket failure on a 2001 Disco II with a bosh engine.

I have heard on first start up the faint sound of water gurgling in the center of the dash in side the Rover.

Is there a procedure I could follow to give me an idea that head gasket failure is in the near future or hopefully not. I may need to go on a long trip and well it would not end well if broken down.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Water Gurgling means you have an air pocket in the water system normally cause because someone let the Antifreeze level get low. Check the antifreeze level first, and you will need to bleed the system of air.

The only sure fire way to tell is to perform a coolant system pressure test to verify a coolant leaks location.
In the mean time, I would suggest you drive that vehicle as little as possible to prevent an over heat and an expensive repair.

Possible Head Gasket Failure Symptoms

I do have a very small coolant leak on the lines or possibly the gasket going into the mass air flow sensor. I am sure that's the only one. Could this air in the system lead to an over heat situation.

Thanks very much to all for this help.

If you have coolant leak at the intake, this is sadly normal... buy a new gasket for it and replace it... about 1 hour work.

Symptoms of Head Gasket failure

Could a head gasket failure cause an influx of air into the cooling system? It seems that my coolant leek on the mass airflow sensor is rather small and my coolant level is not very low.
I'm just concerned about head gasket failure because of the cost associated with this repair. Has anyone created a solution as to the correct alloy to keep these head gaskets from failing so easily. Is the coolant system pressure test the teller of a head gasket failure.

It depends, how often do you check all your fluid levels, where does your coolant level sit prior to a cold start which is the only time to get an accurate level.

Symptoms of a head gasket failure

Its never been very low. Its right now and has never been lower than at max a inch or a couple of centimeters below the full. However I have recently or about 500 or so miles ago had the thermostat replaced by a quailfied Rover Mechanic.

You may just need to bleed the system to get rid of any air and then maintain a coolant level at the seam of the coolant bottle and only check it before cold starting.
