We have a 95 Classic, decided to do the hoses so I changed the oil and then washed the engine down. After washing it down it would not start, would hardly turn over.

Swapped batteries and it then started and ran fine. The "bad" battery seems to be holding a charge today. My wife took it to work, about 35 miles each way. Ran fine going to work. About halfway back the svc engine light came on but ran fine. When she got to the house the idle was a little rough.

This morning found the 44 code. Did a quick check on the wires to the O2 sensor, the vacum lines and the dist rotor, cap and wires. The 7 wire was dirty at the plug end and the 7 plug was loose! Cleaned the connection, tightened the plug, pulled it out and the threads were dirty but the plug looked good (stuff blowing by?). 5 tight but I pulled it and it looked a bit sooty but the rest were okay and tight. The rotor and cap have some wear around the contacts. Wires and rotor and cap about two years old, 225,000 miles on the truck.

So tomorrow another look at the wires for the O2 sensor and the vacum lines. Don't think it was the washing down, since it didn't do it for over 50 miles and eight hours? Any ideas? Cleared the code by pulling the connection to the code display, is that the "serial connection"?

I believe it is the serial connections. But you should still have the battery load tested, could still be a battery issue.

I'll check the battery.

I drove it today and it starts and runs great and after it warms up a bit the idle goes rough. Stop it for a bit and it will start fine and then as it warms up the idle will get rough. Only code I get is still 44.

http://www.fourfold.org/LR_FAQ/RR/FAQ.Engines.Fault.Codes.html

Code 44 - Lambda sensor A - left bank
Code 45 - Lambda sensor B - right bank

If one of these fault codes is displayed check the wiring to that particular lambda sensor.

If both codes are displayed, the voltage supply to the heater coils of the sensors must be checked. Refer to test 26, continuity test procedure.

Lambda sensor is the O2 sensor.

We jjust get code 44

I just keep getting code 44. Getting the O2 sensor out looks like it will be easier than on a Jag but I lose the wiring somewhere behind the engine. What wiring I have been able to follow looks good so far, will try to check continuity today. Got to do some tractor work and some other things too. Thanks for the help.

Wow, O2 sensors are not cheap!!

The cheapest one that will fit so far I have found is $100 at a local place. Has anyone used a 3 wire univeral replacement. How bad of job was that??

Got the light cleared!! Yesterday cleaned the stepper valve and a few other things, tried to disconnect the left O2 sensor again but had problem getting my hands on it. But it my pushing and pulling I heard it click again. When I put it together the first time after cleaning I did here and feel it click as I put it back together, I assume I didn't get both sides to mate. Disconnected the battery for a few minutes and then connected it back up. Light and code were out, have yet to come back. Think the cleaning did it but I didn't have the connector back solid. Thanks for the help!!

Just go the same code

I just had the check engine light come on. Also rough idle, to the point where it the engine stalls if i don't keep the idle up by giving it gas. I don't know if I should attempt to work on it myself or take it to my friends at British Auto Center...? I'm not very experienced in working with my rangie, but any input would be appreciated!

Cleaning the stepper motor or the IAC is very easy... if you can use a screwdriver and a can of contact cleaner you can do the job.

Do a search on Stepper motor, and there is a pic of what you are looking for.
