95 disco fuel pump, is it shot?

My truck wont start. I was told to check to see if my fuel pump is coming on in my 95 disco series 1. Ive removed the plate, connections seem fine. Turned key then went and checked. No sound or anything. Does this mean it's shot, or do I actively have to be trying to turn the engine over for it turn on?

more info needed, but to start with mileage? Last major tune up... last time the fuel filter was changed. Have you check fuel pressure at the fuel rail in the engine bay?

you have to be in the boot area to listen for the fuel pump when the key is turned it will only stay on for a second or two to prime this system until the engine is started.
