Alright, the new VSS is intalled. And boy, that was fun. It's a "one hand only" job. For whichever hand you choose, be ready for the delightful gouging of exhaust heat shield in the back of your hand for the duration of the job. First undo the 2-wire plug that requires an angled pick to unlatch the clip. Wiggle the plug out while prying the clip. OK, now some real fun... a 5mm hex wrench (used two types) First, the "jack knife" style to crack it, and get it started. Of course, you get VERY small turns because of the tight space. When the bolt starts to back out, I switched to a single "L" type of wrench. This gave me a longer turn throw.
Now it just pops out easily. When I put the new one in I made sure the 4-sided shaft of the VSS went smoothly into the female side of the transfer box. Then carefully starting the bolt back into the threads, still barely holding the unit in place with the other hand. It's such a cramped space, and this is where the heat shield carved the alphabet into the back of my hand. VERY tedious! It went in fine, but theres a little play in the unit right before I snugged it down. This worried me a bit. The plastic housing of the VSS doesn't seem to have a positive "lock" into the tran. box. So, it wiggles a little, I hope that is normal. Then after cracnking it down it stopped moving. Then I snapped the 2 wire plug back on, and yes you need the pick again to help it on.
I must admit, the "check eng" turned off 3 days before I replaced the VSS. So, I can't tell if this is the cure straight away.
I also replaced the steering stabiliser while I was under there. That went much faster for me!

If the VSS doesn't fix the problem you could try the TPS (throtle position sensor) if your problem is at hwy speeds, this little unit on the throtle body has if you like a printed circuit inside and a scribe to show the throtle position, now where do you think that scribe spends most of it's time? well if the trucks scene a lot of hwy use? in the same position your foot is in on the hwy at normal cruising speed hence they wear at that point and you lose the signal only at that point. They can be tested using a multimeter but if you have friendly used parts guy or a friend that would lend you one off his? it's a 2 min change over to try.
I have also once had this problem come from the crankshaft speed sensor again 2 mins to change but as always "do you want to buy the part to try it" sometimes it just makes sence to take it into a dealer or a good LR specialist shop and let them diagnose it for you
