hi everyone,

just purchased a Discovery II 2001, love it, my first Land Rover. Just a question: when i accelerate there is a whining noise, i have heard it slightly on other cars i have driven, but this truck seems louder. It is only when i accelerate from a stop, after it switches gears, no more noise. Anybody know if this is normal with this particular vehicle. Thanks.

Sounds like the fan... the fan on Rovers tend to be loud... but if it were a squeal, then I would say it was the idle pulley for the S-belt.

it's not really a squeal, almost like a turbo type sound. Like i said, i've heard it in cars while accelerating from a stop, but this Rover seems louder.

I would say, replace all the fluids. Trans and filter, transfer and diffs. My 2000 disco whined when I got it and after replacing the oil in the transfer case it stopped. A good rule for purchasing a pre owned is to tune it up replace all fluids and filters and have the coolant flushed. JMO ofcourse.

The transfer case also emits a high pitched whine when under load. Perfectly normal, unfortunately. :hmpf:
