Ok just posted a quick note about this in the other thread on generic uses for the 3rd Land Rover button on the key.

Here's the topic on this thread...

Has anyone installed an automatic starter on there LR3?

My local auto specialist says he can install an automatic starter and also program the Land Rover's third button to use as the off/on for the automatic starter. Running about $699 now for the whole programming and auto starter kit.

Care to share thoughts and knowledge?

sounds cool. But I rather put that toward rock slider or a brush bar. You probably on really need that 3 month out of the year

I like the idea, but I would suggest then changing the 3rd button design to a spilling gas can image to reflect the actual effect . . .

Do you have the cold weather package (heated windscreen and seats)? If so, do you really need to preheat the car? Those seats are amazing! I have heard that the new (2009?) steering wheel is heated, and might be retrofitable. That would be nice....

ha, true.. but

maybe a flame symbol for when your cars warm inside when its -5 outside and covered in snow.... and in the summer a nice ice cube symbol for when its 90 out and the car air conditioner cools the car prior to hopping in it...

where im located, auto starters are extrememly nice.. had one on my old truck and used it all the time... and not just for vanity and gas wasting.

but if anyones heard of having them installed on the LR3's please share..

yes i do have cold weather package, seats and windshield, which i agree are awesome... but im often in sub freezing temps from dec - march.

The Rover keys have radio chips in them, so that means you would have to have a key in the car at all times in order for it to actually start. Kinda scary, cause if someone broke in your car and found the key, they've got your car.

hmm, he never said anything about having to leave a key in the car.. i think there is a module bypass of some sorts, because its only until recently that he said he would be able to install auto starts on my truck... when i first bought it in 2006 he said it wasnt able to be done.

I believe the installer will snip the mechanical key portion on the key assembly and tie it up near the ignition switch. That is how the auto start system works on my wife's Expedition.

Auto start is a very nice option... worried about wasting fuel? Its not good for your engine to be under load until properly warmed up. Save your cylinders some wear and tear - warm it up in cold weather!!

i think you are right. at first my guy told me id most likely end up loosing/forfeiting a key, which is probably because they take part of it out like you mentioned. i think ill wait til next winter to get this installed... in the meantime if anyone gets it done or has more info, do share.
