Its steep enough to make my butt pucker just by watching it. LOL! What terrain setting would you use to climb that hill? I bet his family had fun going up that hill with him. If it was my family, it would be nothing but screaming the entire time!

Interesting...usually things are steeper than they look on camera!

Here is a shot I took last weekend that is every bit as steep as it looks:
(yes, that's Bill Burke walking beside)

Yes; my premise is that it would be steeper than it looks!

Well, I pulled out my trusty iphone inclinometer on that youtube vid, it measured 60 degrees. Obviously the viewing angle of the camera to the truck will make a difference, but even the great LR3 can't do 60 degrees....or can it? nwoods, did the driver have a measurement of the slope on your picture? At any rate, both are incredible.

My take:

There is a difference between what the truck "can" do and what the truck is "designed" to do. It's not so much the physical limitation (rolling) that precludes the truck from doing side-slopes of only 35 degrees, but more the lubrication system of the engine. Similarly with inclines and descents.

I'm sure there is some uncertainty in your trusty iphone gadget and also with the camera angle...maybe between those two things there is a 10-degree discrepancy. That makes it a 50 degree incline, which is only 5 degrees more than the rig is designed to do and most likely within what it's capable of doing.

I think the LR3 has more guts than any of us. It will probably do whatever we have the nerve to ask it...

Nwoods, Where did you take that pic?

Borrego Springs area. I estimate the hill to be about 40 degrees, maybe 45. Too steep to drive up, and steep enough that you pretty much slide down. The manouver was really cool. The hill ends in a sharp bank, and you can't turn because there isn't enough room. So Bill Burke showed how you can spin the wheels in reverse to get the truck to crabwalk backwards a bit and have the truck pivot on the front wheels. Lockers help, but the 4Runnner in the photo is unlocked and was still able to do it. Pretty neat little manouver. There is a youtube video somewhere...

YouTube - Chris - Big Hill.m4v

This video is a bit better example of the reverse spin/pivot manouver:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNceeGl_Iac
