Yes, you can use the kebab stick, or look through the crank timing port for the enlarged gap as someone slowly rotates the engine. If you use a rod, kebab stick, or whatever on the cylinder... be careful it doesn't get stuck. I had a telescopic rod get stuck using this technique and had to remove the head.
