The catalytic converter (at least I think that is where it's coming from) on my '08 LR3 SE ticks and pings when the engine gets up to normal operating temperature. It's quite loud and frequennt, and easy to hear even with the engine running. After the engine is shut off, it continues for 4-5 minutes before it cools down and stops.

Is this normal? I've taken it to two different dealers. The first told me it happens sometimes on new cars but would stop after I got about 5K miles on it (it did not) and the second has told me it's just normal.

The car runs fine, but I know that my previous '06 LR3 did not make any sounds, and I've never owned another car that made noise like this.

I actually noticed it in my 06 today as I left it running and opened the door to get something out of the back. But I,ve heard it before and thought nothing of it. My 08 Yukon did it as well but was also masked by the annoying fuel pump.

what is the real function of a catalytic converter? According to my dad, my truck has some problems with it. he is asking me to buy this metal cat converter brand for it. Is this a good brand?

The 08 should be under warranty, but it sounds more like heat shield popping..
Cats are bad, when you can hit them and they rattle, like loose marbles in a can.
