One day my DII started to idle roughly and then the check engine light came on and the idle settled down - but the light stayed on. I took in in to the dealer since it is covered by an extended warranty.

First they replaced the spark plug wires. That night it ran GREAT, until I re-started it later that night and had the same rough idle and engine light.

After a long diagnosis at the dealer, they determined that the cylinder sleeve in #4 had slipped and cracked the block. The truck is in now getting a new block.

My questions..

1. This is a 4.0 engine with 63K on it. It is driven by my wife and has had an easy life. I'm positive that it has never overheated. What would cause the sleeve to slip?

2. While the truck is apart, is there anything I should have the dealer look into?

Thanks

I wouldn't say this is a common problem, but I would say it is a "known" problem with the DII engine. I have an 03' and I had my engine replaced last year. Thankfully, it was and still is under factory warranty. I plan on keeping my truck for years to come and have though about the extended warranty.

For what it's worth, I have a friend who had an 01' DII with the 4.0 engine and he had the same thing happen. It started to run rough up a hill, smoothed out and when he took it in he was told one of the cylinder sleeves slipped and cracked the block. Ask your dealer about this sometime. I found it interesting that LR bores out the engine and slipes cold sleeves into the engine. This is how they set the cylinder sleeve. I'm no engineer, but this sounds archaic to me!

BTW, who did you go through for your extended warranty?
