Picked up this 2002 Rover Discovery ll SE Kalahari edition on Craigslist. I got it for cheap but it definitely needs some work. The rear chassis is pretty rusted. There is a small exhaust leak coming from the front of where the silencer connects to the exhaust pipe that goes towards the front head pipe. The engine does have a bit of oil on the outside of it and a very small amount of coolant on top of the engine. I’m thinking this is most likely a headgasket issue. Since this is my project/beater truck I’m thinking I might get a bottle of blue Devil and cross my fingers. Any advice and or encouragement on any of these issues is much appreciated. ha thanks.

Thank you- yeah I only saw a few posts about the silencer. From what I’ve researched it looks like it can be taken out and just a straight pipe can be added. Might be a cheaper fix. Anyone else hear of this or have experience with deleting the silencer?

Just in case anyone was wondering about the silencer/resonator removal I thought I’d follow up my post. So I had a very talented mechanic and welder remove the silencer (resonator) and weld in a straight pipe. It sounds great not necessarily louder just more of a throaty V8 sound. This was a really cheap fix and I’m glad I did it. I have also noticed better acceleration and performance as well as a slight increase in mpg. As far as the head gasket issue it was actually the valve seals which we managed to solve by tightening the valve seal bolts and also adding some Lucas engine oil stabilizer which I’m pretty sure has stopped the leaks or at least slowed it down considerably- of course I’ll have to further keep an eye on it.

Rust converter unless it is really bad and need welding.

a small exhaust leak coming from the front of where the silencer connects to the exhaust pipe
Weld it or replace it.

engine does have a bit of oil on the outside of it
Probably seeping through the rocker cover gasket.

a very small amount of coolant on top of the engine.
Most likely the throttle body heater. A cheap fix you can do yourself. Do it before it fails.
