Engine bay cleaning?

I was driving during the weekend on a muddy road and as it is expected my Disco got mud all over. I had it pressure wash but did not washed the engine bay as I have heard that it is not prudent to use the pressure washers on it. Could any one give me a tip or pointers on how to clean the mud off the engine bay with out damaging anything?

I normally pressure wash mine '97 Disco, but I also have heard that it can cause issues. If you don't want to pressure wash, a good degreaser should work.

I cleaned my 96' Disco I guess used a little much water. Engine would turn over but no go. I day or two later engine fired up and ran fine. I guess a little WD40 could of helped???

Sounds like you got the ECU wet... passenger side firewall near the bottom if I recall correctly

Just make sure you don't spray on the alternator, ignition wires etc, and electrical connections. May be better to cover them with a plastic bag and not use too much pressure .

I have had no problems with my 03 when washing under the hood.

I will take your advice, I think Im going to pressure wash only the radiator and other parts where I don't see electrical wires and for that part I will use a wet cloath.

Dielectric Grease, works great for helping to prevent water from mucking up your electrical connections. I have used it on all electrical connections under the hood and I wash the engine compartement everytime I change the oil.
Still I would avoid a pressure washer.

Here is a great way to clean the engine... Back in my BMW tunning days it was always a sure bet for a meet or show.

1) Clean with water as best you can avoiding the above mentioned electronic problem areas.

2)Shut the hood and go for a drive.... let the engine get nice and warm.

3) Spray foaming tire cleaner... ( yeah the armor all type stuff) on the motor and all plastic & painted surfaces. Shut the hood.

4) Go inside, enjoy your favorite beverage or two

5) Open hood... wow thats clean!... But I want it to shine like new....
Spray WD40 on entire engine bay.

6) Repeat step 4


7) grab sunglasses... Open hood... Now thats nice!
Very little work and your Discos engine bay will look better than the day they built the thing!
