Simon, as a US and California owner of an LR3, I agree with you!!
Unfortunately, California has outlawed diesels in new cars I think.

Go right ahead and use Royal Purple if you want. FWIW, I use "RP" (20w50).

tzucc...

why are they outlawed ? Outside the UK portion of Europe (we are an outpost of Europe of course and our gov is more politically aligned to mr Bush - unfortunately)... diesels are more the norm than petrol.

If its pollution then how come most large petrol saloon cars kick out more CO2 and do far worse MPG than my 2 plus tonne Disco3 ?

Be interesting to find out.

I read something about how in LA most of the pollution is caused by diesels, and so that's part of the logic. Of course, that is not a complete answer, if not only by your logic above, which again I agree with. In a split second I would have chosen the diesel over the V8. In fact, if I can buy a diesel HSE in another state, I probably would drive mine there and go trade in mine. However, if I recall, the diesel is not even offered in the states. I think it has something to do with particulate matter in the exhaust of diesel vs gas.

and fwiw, thanks to Blair for siding with Bush.

As I posted elsewhere numerous times... in 2007, "clean diesel" fuel will be rolled out in North America. If we do get Diesel from Land Rover, expect engines based on this new design that will be legal in states like California (their largest market) and New York.

If we do see diesel, I'd expect a larger engine... other than for pure towing/torque, the current diesel engines are a bit underpowered for the heaviest-in-class LR3 in this market.

Just got back from another road trip to Dallas, Tx, from Houston (about 250miles each way).

I did do the oil change before I left(RP 10w30) and i'm not sure if it's due to the new oil but, I had better gas mileage this time then my last trip.

From Houston to Dallas:

Last trip: 17.6-17.8mpg

This trip: 18.2-18.5mpg

Similar conditions, this time the weather was about 3-5 degrees cooler.

From Dallas to Houston:

Last trip: 17.2-17.3

This trip: 17.7-17.8

This time a little less head wind(going against wind) and about 5-6 degrees cooler.

Driving style same both trips. 75-80mph most of the time and 80-90mph occasionally.

What do you think weather a big factor? or is oil somewhat of a factor?

I would be all over VW's new V10 diesel in the LR3, that thing has some impressive stats - 335Hp and 510fp of torque. Of course diesel is more expensive than super, at least in the DC area. But other than torque I doubt any of us would see much fuel economy improvement, I hear some powerstroke/cummins fans in their super-duty p'ups seeing 18 to 20mpg but most are where we are at 14-17mpg.

I plan on using Mobil One, both recommended and factory filled by Mercedes and Porsche. Of course they recommend 0W-40, but Land Rover specs out the far more available 5W-30 which you can get just about anywhere very inexpensively. I recommend Mobil One.
