Just changed the front brake pads of the Disco II (01), after which I took it for a drive to test the brakes and when I returned home noticed that the front wheels were smoking. Of course it was raining in Tampa, so I thought I had just went through a puddle. Also, at 50 mpg the car shakes and then stops after 55 or more. Plus the brakes feel spongy and soft. I then decided to replace the rotors, put it all back together and I am still getting the spongy pedal and left front smoking. Any ideas. Do you think that there might be air in the line as we did unscrew the brake cap in order to squeeze back the calipers?

Sounds more like a stuck caliper. When was the last time you flushed the brake system?

No lugs, unless it is the caliper that is bad... Did you change the lugs while you had them off?

http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/ANR3679GK.cfm I think they may also have the solid ones... call and check.

Bleeding/flushing brake system on a D2 is a little bit fun compared to a D1.

Best and easiest way would be find someone with the Land Rover testbook computer or autologic, or OUCH go to the dealer... otherwise I have read (never done it) that you can activate the ABS pump with a 12v battery and a couple of jumpers. Otherwise you can't flush the system.

No, but ordered new lugs from ebay. So you think the sticky caliper is the reason for the 50 mpg shimmy? And you think the ABS brake bleeding could cure the brake pedal play?

yes and yes... if you have smoking brakes the caliper sounds like it is sticking... you should flush the brake system every 2 years at minimum... moisture is your enemy, and brake fluid gets hot which will cause condensation i.e water to get in the fluid..

Don't blame the vehicle, blame the person that has taken care of it in the past... or lack of care.
