Heated seats

I have a 2007 LR3 HSE with heated seat (used too); the front seats suddenly stopped working at the same time. The dealer removed the seat cover (passenger side) and noticed a 12" diameter ring on the foam cushion claiming that this is a spill. I don't know of a any spill which could create a 12" diameter brown ring and why would it happen to 2 seats at the same time, I'm wondering if this is merely the residual effect of a burned out heating elements? Any thoughts on this?
