curently...96 discovery, will only take reverse and first.
events leaadng up to this...bought the rover about 3 wks ago. within a couple of days after, it began to make a "pop" sound coming from the front when makeing sharp turns going forward or in reverse. also, the diff shifter had alot of free play but wouldnt shift. a few days ago after the pop was heard it would only go in first and reverse, disoverd broken shifter linkage and reapaired it but after putting it back together it will still only go in reverse and first. any ideas?????

Oh more info than the other thread. Popping could be Diff related in the front diff or the Knuckles at the ends (name escapes me today) This would cause popping if they are out of grease or the diff is out of oil.

I would start by removing the center console and watching linkage to make sure it is moving properly.

Repaired and freed linkage. Seems to shift smoothly. Still only getting motion in first and reverse.???

Well if it is only going in reverse and first gear only... sadly I will have to say it is a transmission issue. Pretty sure mine is still under my 97 Disco if you need used. Call Nathan in my Signature and I am sure he will give you a good deal on a used one. Mine is being parted out on his lot and I leave it up to him.
