The owners manual implies that you can shift into 4L between 24 MPH and 2 MPH. I've just been rolling and dropping down to 4L, not sure exactly how fast but its been a smooth transition. Today I tried shifting down while rolling faster (less than 10 MPH probably) and the transmission doesn't pick the right gear to drop into and slowed the vehicle a bit much rather than picking the right gear.

I felt like trying the shift again but the next time give it gas to bring the RPM's up after actuating the transfer case to 4L and on the transmission change from N to D in normal terrain mode. The t-case and gearbox is advance and new so I didn't want to risk a stupid, expensive and potentially disabling mistake and try it. But it does make sense to bring the R's up so that the shift would be smoother if it always drops into 2nd from N while in D?

If it were a manual then I could make the t-case shift in 4L, but have the transmission in 3rd or 4th. Maybe that is what is intended, to drop into 4L then from N into command mode, bump a shift up all in one motion while traveling 15 MPH? lol

How is it possible to drive 15 MPH or even 20 MPH and drop down to 4L smoothly?

I'm typically in 2nd gear or going less than 10 mph dropping down to 4L. D to N, 4L, and back to D. Now I'm wondering if it's possible to do it while going faster.

Next week I'm going to try giving the engine some RPM's after engaging 4L and before going from N to D to see if that will allow driving faster than 5-10MPH and be smooth.

I think it’s under 25 or 30 for H-L and if I remember correctly I think you can switch from L-H up to 50 or 70 mph. Think they have this for towing usages so you can start in low and switch to high to put less stress on the transmission when towing heavy loads.

If you want the most accurate answer go into the owners manual and look under low range section, I remember reading it in there.

The owners manual doesn't say how to make a smooth shift when at speed from 4H to 4L. But this morning I tried shifting from 4H to 4L at 15-20 MPH and this time brought the RPM's up to ~2,200 after engaging 4L, then while maintaining that RPM shifted from N to D and it was smooth. It needs rev matching is what the problem was. The engine RPM's need to match the rotation speed of the transmission input shaft at the given speed for it to be like buttah. Its my first advanced electronic transfer case.

Taken from the Land Rover iGuide Online for model year 2016 LR4. I'm not sure if this applies to other production years.

RANGE CHANGING ON THE MOVE [G1800132]

The recommended method of changing the range of the gearbox is with the vehicle stationary, see STATIONARY RANGE CHANGING. For experienced off-road drivers, a change from low (Lo) range to high (Hi) range, while on the move can be accomplished, see CHANGING FROM LOW TO HIGH RANGE.

CAUTION:
Changing from Hi range to Lo range can only be performed while the vehicle stationary.

CHANGING FROM LOW TO HIGH RANGE [G1800134]

To change from low (Lo) range to high (Hi) range, while the vehicle is moving:

  1. Make sure the vehicle's speed is less than 60 km/h (38 mph).
  2. Use the rotary gear selector to engage the gearbox in Neutral (N).
  3. Press and release the Hi range button.
The vehicle's range change indicators will confirm the change. See RANGE CHANGE INDICATORS.

NOTE:
If the Hi range button is pressed before N is selected, the message SELECT NEUTRAL FOR RANGE CHANGE will be displayed in the Message centre.
Once complete, use the rotary gear selector to engage the gearbox in Drive (D).

What is stressful about shifting into 4L while driving to the transfer case?

You're changing gear ratios... usually some sort of sleeve/collar is moving. Best to be done stationary with no additional stress on the components and engine.

There probably are some sort of synchronization rings that allows our transfer case to work at speed, but it's just not worth it in my opinion. I've noticed if you're in the low range box and you go straight from drive to park without letting the strain off the driveshaft you get an awful kind of unwinding/gear skipping noise. Have noticed this on an LR3, and my LR4. Doesn't happen if I switch into neutral for a quick second to let the load out of the drivetrain.

Go watch a few YouTube videos on how electronic transfer cases work. They're very complex.
