Have a '97 Disco with 170K (God Bless Her) I am experiencing a hesitation on/off as if you are letting off the gas....the thing is, it only happens after approx 25 minutes of highway driving. Not evident driving around town. This has happened my last two drives and when I park it, it goes away until I drive for another 25 min. stint at hwy. I changed the fuel filter and used Seafoam in the fuel. It finally tripped the check engine light, I will have the diagnostics done next week but wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks,

The same things has started happening to my disco. I was told it could be the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Here is a website that was listed in a previous thread. www.discountbritishparts.com They sell for $89. I have not replaced my as of yet but maybe this will help you.

more on hesitation

The first time this hesitation happened, my speedometer went to 0 while doing about 50mph. Then miraculously came back to life. Could this be a bad Vehicle Speed Sensor?

My truck does not go to "0", it just sputters and I can't accelerate. You may have a bigger problem. Sounds like some sort of short! Wish I could be more helpful.

Are you loosing power revs etc i had a similar sounding problem which has been attributed to sticky valves i find moving from drive to 3rd flooring the gas then moving back to drive clears my particular problem

tirewall,

Yes, if the speed'o' is going from 50 to 0 then back the VSS may vary well be the issue.

Here is the description of what the VSS does:

The vehicle speed sensor is located on the side of the Transfer box adjacent to the parking brake. The sensor provides road speed data to the ECM. The ECM in turn detects vehicle movement from the road speed input and ensures that idle air control mode is disengaged. Should the vehicle speed sensor fail in service the ECM idle air control would become erratic.

The sensor also provides road speed data to the electric speedometer and cruise control ECU.

I have ahd the same problem on mt 2000 land rover discovery, 70,000 miles. When I took it to my dealership they said since it only does it in 4th gear, it must be my driving and the sputtering is because it under load, I'm not a mechanic but thats not right, gotta love the dealership. I bought a VSS but the pivtures on Discoweb does not look like the the part I bought, my part is about the diameter of a small cigar and is about 4 inches long it says on the package its a speedometer transducer so it is the right part, does anyone know or have pics of one of a 2000 land rover, thanks a bunch
