Howdy from NE Ohio, I'm a newbe to the forum and hope to meet new friends here. I'm picking up a 2002 Discovery II with 80,000 miles. It hasn't seen salt yet.

I would like to find out more info on the 2002 Land Rover, Like: What kind of problems may start happening with a unit of this age and mileage? And what area's of the body will stare to rust out (going to do some rust proofing)

Welcome to the forum.

at 80k you should start with just changing all the fluids and perform a tune up to make sure you know the starting point of the vehicle.

Transmission doesn't have dipstick and can be a pain to change the fluid properly but I highly recommend getting it done or doing it yourself.

Rust the entire outer shell is aluminum so the only real rust issues will be where the aluminum and the steel meet (dissimilar metals tend to corrode).

Joey, Thanks for the reply I think I’m a good shade tree mechanic but I’m not familiar with some of the built-in problems or characteristic of the 2002 Land Rover Discovery. The more I’ve learned and read about the Rover the more I’m going to enjoy it. It will fit right in with my 2002 Quigley 4X4 Ford Van.

What do most of the owners think of the mileage/performance “chips” for the rover, any preference? I have a programmable unit for my diesel Van; it helped on both the mileage and towing end.
