When I got new tires they said my shocks were starting to leak and it was time for new ones. They could order them and install them for $600. I'm just wondering how possible is this to do on my own at home? As for the brand, I'm thinking of getting Bilstein shocks, maybe Koni, or maybe Rancho. Also, would you recommend getting new coils too? My disco has about 90k miles on it. I figured if I could do the work myself I could use the money I save for higher quality parts.

shocks not too hard and you can do them yourself. Four nuts hold down the shock towers under the hood and are easy to remove. The nut and bushings are a little tight space-wise on the bottom but you can get them off and back on with a little patience.

Rears are pretty standard.

Bilsteins are very good shocks and you can get them from Atlantic British or elsewhere on line. I can't remember the exact price but you can get fronts and rears for about 50-60% of the price you were quoted.

Don't forget to change the steering damper while your at it. As for springs it isn't that hard if you have the tools.

Joey is 100% right! Get a Bilstein steering damper too. Lower quality ones will wear out fast.

I bought a manual spring compressor (basically two long clamps) from a local auto parts store for $35 and put new front spring in in a couple of hours. Big difference in handling (better). Good luck

In case you're still shopping for shocks, I bought a set of four new Bilsteins on Ebay for $270 delivered. There are more sets on Ebay all the time. I like 'em.
