bought a freelander 2 years ago and loved every minute of ownership but since the pinion on the ird broke due to the oil level plug went missing now every minute seems like a bad dream, the ird now has a hole in the housing and i have found some fragments of gear teeth in the oil , will pull apart 2morrow and let you know the outcome, pitty the people who designed them did'nt think of a transfrer box to go between 4x4 and 2x4

Welcome to the forum. Sadly who ever designed the Freelander really wasn't thinking at all.

i had a real good look at my ird today and could'nt believe the size of the crack that runs at the bottom WOW ! seems that i need a replacement unit which i cannot afford at this time, i think i am going to take out the rear prop shaft and go with the front weel drive for now if it is safe to do so. any comments pple ?

after finding 5 teeth missing from the pinion gears in the ird on my freelander i have decided to take the rear pinion out and blank the hole with a metal plate as i believe that this is the best way to go for the moment, next step is to sell the damn thing, when i saw the logo { worlds best 4x4x far } i wanted one ,i guess that i chose the worst 4x4xfar in buying the freelander
