Just to close the loop on this thread, I sent the photos to my LR mechanic. I told him that the group consensus was that it was a breather for the front diff.
He's a man of few words in certain situations. His reply:
"They’re right it’s the front differential breather tube. Leave it alone."
So there you have it. Thanks to all who chimed in.
