I'm hoping someone might be able to tell me how to tighten the gear box knob on my LR3. Mine became very loose today and can do easily do a 360. Obviously not very safe if I want to use the manual +/- feature or even shifting it into reverse. I can take the center plastic piece off, but don't know what to do after that.

Thanks!

Try giving it a sharp push down. It probably is just sitting on top of the shift rod and pushing it will snap it back on.

Well, I tried that. I couldn't get it to snap down any further on the shift rod. It feels like the handle is pushed all the way down, but is still very loose (only spins).

Just talked to the service guy at Land Rover Dallas. He said that, if the handle can spin, it is broken and I can't just tighten a screw. He said I will need to have it replaced ($115 parts, labor, and tax).

I took the center plastic piece off (the part that has a brushed aluminum look to it) and, after further inspection, I would have no idea how to remove the gear box handle to do the work myself. However, I would be happy to do the work myself since it seems like it would be simple enough to do.

There is no set screw, the knob just snaps onto the shift shaft. If someone attempted to turn it, they broke it. To remove the knob, put it park, put both hands on the knob and firmly move it upward without twisting. Keep your face out of the way. The sliver trim has nothing to do with retaining or removing the knob. The labor time is about 30 seconds.

Thank you for the reply! Sounds like it is definitely broken. Wish I knew this when I bought it. I just purchased my LR3 about a month ago and didn't notice the loose gear box grip until this week, so it must have already broken when I bought it. I didn't notice it until I used the +/- feature the other day to manually shift up and down one day in traffic. Ugh!
