I did a search, but didn't find anything specific. Does anyone know if there are any LR3 "easter eggs" - things that are cool capabilities that aren't widely known? I've heard about the 1791 on the Nav and that is pretty slick (too bad it doesn't work on the new DVD).

For example, on my TT I can hold down two buttons on the climate control and walk through a built in diagnostic capability. On our Touareg, we used to have the ability through a VAGCOM to change certain settings (like remove the stupid "accept" screen on the Nav).

Any tips/tricks on the LR3 for a new owner?

Thanks,
Rich

I came from the wonders of the VW/Audi world as well. I got spoiled by all the cool things you can do with VW/Audi cars. . . No such luck in the LR3. Minimal to no programmable things compared to the flexibility of the VWAG.

Yep, no problem. The instructions are on my other laptop so I'll get them for you when I get home.

Are you familiar with a VAGCOM? If not, I'll give you some details on that too (you can get a cheap one on eBay for ~$20 and download the freeware software from rosstech and it gives you 90% of the capability).

I'm not familiar with that. I'd be interested in that too.
Let me know when you have a minute.
Thanks

With VW/Audi cars, you can plug into the OBD-2 port and actually program a host of different things. Thru the OBD port, you can connect to all of the car's ECUs. Everything from the engine to locks, to brakes, to Audio, etc. . .

The tool needed is a specialized OBD-2 reader. The ***-COM is by far the one to get. It is a cable that has a USB connection on the PC end and an OBD-2 connection on the other. You plug it into your car and your computer. You then have software that presents you with all the different modelues you can access in your car. Many of them allow you to test and run diagnostics on every bit an piece of electronic hardware. Want to test your post cat left bank O2 sensor? Yup, you can. How about your ABS pump? Yup.

You can also program a bunch of options. One of the most common is reprogramming the locks. Basically, when you press the buttons on the remote you can have a whole bunch of different things happen, that you can program. Things like on button press to lock: lock all or just lock drivers. Don't sound horn or do. Don't flash lights or do. Don't or do lock all and unlock all based on speed or trans in park. . . Roll down all windows or roll up on double press. . .

The thing I would say however. . .buy your cable and software from Ross Tech. Don't try to um. . .kinda cheat. Ross Tech is a fantasic tiny family rund company that provides real live true customer support. For the years I had my Audis and VWs, I could alwaqys count on great service from Ross Tech. It is far worth a few extra bucks. (I have zero affiliation with them other than I was a satisfied customer and they provided personal customer support to everyone. The old kind of customer support that makes you feel fantastic you bought a product from them. . .)

Here is the link:

http://www.wak-tt.com/climate/climatecodes.htm

He points out the two codes I find most useful (voltage and coolant temp) at the bottom (after the instructions on now to use it).

BTW - I agree with schafari on the Ross Tech items. However, Ross Tech is actually smart in another way: by offering a freeware version of the SW, they do an excellent job of getting you addicted at which point you will likely upgrade to the full version just to see what you are missing. Brilliant in my opinion (which also helps explain why they even offer a freeware version).

That's very cool. I've played with it a little now. Do you have a website that you would recommend to find more of these little "easter eggs"?

VWVortex is the best that I've found:

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=10

There are also a couple other good ones:

Audi TT Car Club of America has a really good FAQ:

http://www.audittcca.com/faq/

And AudiWorld has some excellent technical articles (there forum is also pretty good for content, but is terrible when it comes to navigation):

http://www.audiworld.com/tech/

Make sure to look at the links in the middle of the page (where it says things like "interior", "electrical", etc. Those are the best pages. When you get to them, click on the "TT" at the top to get the TT specific info (like I said, their navigation is pretty screwy).

If you are looking to buy things, I'm partial to www.ttstuff.com - I've only bought one thing from them (a 3.2L Lower Valence) but they were really good when we bought that and have tons of cool items.

BTW - I haven't done it yet, but when I get "bored" with my car, I'm going to probably chip it. Apparently it transforms the little 1.8T - it goes from ~225HP to ~265HP and upwards of 280 lb.ft. of torque

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.
