There is an excellent article on mileage in latest Car and Driver. But basically, it all depends on your right foot. I still think that getting a replacement car because of mileage is silly - I hope the service manager took the car out for 200 to 300 miles and drove it himself.
Anyway, if you drive like a grandma - you will get great mileage. If you do not, you will not. Try it yourself, set cruise at 55, and reset the computer. Then do the same at 75. Tell me what happens.

so, it appears the V6 isn't any real advantage for mileage.
i was watching the tach the other day while doing some interstate driving. it seems to me that most vehicles today do not tach as high just cruising. a higher 6th gear would seem to help the MPG out for highway mileage. that is one reason these vehicles do much better at 65 than 75 for mileage. i am guessing that LR probably has a gear selected that works best where a majoity of these things are sold or where they think the biggest demographic would like it. hard to say but i know a lot of vehicles today cruise at a lower RPM. OR maybe with the weight they figure a higher 6th gear would be shifting down every time you hit the peddle at all.

Seriously, for the weight of the LR3... it has good gas mileage. It weighs more than a much larger Ford Expedition. It's honestly the heaviest vehicle in it's class. Without the modern 6 speed transmission, it would be even worse.

EPA MPG for the V6 is 14/19 vs. 14/18 on the V8. The LR3 is just too heavy... the V6 has to work pretty hard and will not get better gas mileage; in fact, it might do worse in many scenarios.

Tomasz - You are entitled to your opinion even if you are wrong. If you were getting between 10 and 11 mpg all the time, I think you'd feel otherwise....

Tomasz, his vehicle was broken... really... they just weren't smart enough to fix it.

lacarruk1, I still bet the "transport" fix would have resolved your other vehicle's bad MPG issue. There has been at least 4 confirmed fixes... all stuck under 11 until they did that.

Grommet, I agree. I gave them the printouts from this forum regarding the Transport mode from the first visit to the last and they never wanted to try it......

Hopefully they do now so they can sell the vehicle to someone else.

Hey everyone, great lil community you have here. I'm really glad I stumbled onto the site, it's been pretty informative.

As far as this thread goes, I'll chime in on my vehicle's performance (or lack there of). I have an 05 HSE with about 1200 miles of mixed driving (mostly highway). I've never cracked more than 11-12mpg or 260'ish miles on a full tank. Not complaining here, I love the truck otherwise and the dealership I purchased my LR3 from (Massapequa Land Rover, NY) has been aces since day 1. Thanks for the heads up on the possibility that the truck may need to be brought in for the "transport" fix. This may be a distinct possibility of my poor gas consumption. I'll post an update after I bring the truck in next week, going to have them look into that while they're installing my tail light guards. ( I draw the line when it comes to drilling into the car frame )

Yes, have them put it in Transport Mode... and then take it out of Transport Mode. They'll probably think you're nuts.

Grommet,
It may be here and I can't find it, but what exactly is transport mode and why does it exist in the first place?
Thanks

"Transport mode" is the mode the vehicle is in while it's being shipped to the dealer. Not everything is completely active/functioning while in Transport mode. The dealer then does all the preparation work and brings the vehicle out of that mode when they receive it.

It seems in some rare cases, the engine ECU act inefficiently and seems to not "learn"... and mileage is impacted (always <12 MPG on highway only). The vehicle says it's out of Transport mode, but something is wrong. The fix is basically to "reboot" the LR3: bring it in and out of Transport mode.
