Hi All,

Recently the Disco II started making a loud metal grinding noise when it was idle and then it went away and it started giving a continues vibration without the noise. And then when I was driving the fan belt just came off and the engine over heated and the battery light came on.

anybody have an idea of what happened? I think the fan pulley is bad if there is such thing.

Please help.

I'm not too familiar with the discovery 2's. However I'm sure it's one of the pulley's, water pump pulley or idler tension pulley. Don't know if the ac pulley is a seperate belt. Best to follow the routing and check all that runs thru it. Could be bad bearings in any of the aboved mentioned or rather I'm sure it's one of these items

You need to get in there and look, how old is your belt, has the tensioner ever been replaced? You will need to check both belt idler pullies as well as the belt tensioner.

I have replaced the belt and the tensioner this year. I am not sure what the idler pulley is. What is the best way to test the pulleys?

The idler pulley sits upon the tensioner it is synonomous. Check and see if all that runs on this belt is ok. And remember to always put the belt on the same direction it came off yes it does matter. Because yours fell off it may be that you didn't mark it before removing it and it ran off. I'd still check the component that drive off of it ie: ac compressor, water pump ect.
