Hi, I just found this forum. I've had Rovers for about 18 years (one RR Classic and two Discoveries). I like the RRC the best - it's the best made and really a perfect balance between comfortable ride and practicality. The RRC was my first car and I drove it all over the East Coast racking up 220K miles as I "got used to it". Unfortunately, I have to sell it.
The 1996 Discovery was an evil machine that I was delighted to trade in. Whatever design engineer thought it was "cool" to not put tailight mounting hardware on the OUTSIDE should have been required to fly over and pull out the jump seats and body panels to squirrel paw replacement bulbs. That was probably the same design engineer who came up with the only headlights I was unable to replace. It was way cheaper/easier/less stressful to pay PepBoys to install while apologzing for diabolical design.
My daily driver '04 Discovery has a number of design improvements. Like normally attaching tail lights... I bought it LR pre-certified and will never do that again! Prior to purchase, the car had enough side damage to have about 1/3 of the side panels bondo-ed and repainted (I learned this when my local dealer replaced the head gaskets). It does explain why the trim fell off the door. The dealer who sold it said "It's a used car, what do you expect?". And Land Rover North America says it can't police what its dealers do.
If I had the time, money and skill, I'd restore my RRC and drive that 'til the end of time. The new ones are way too $$$ and far too gussied for my tastes...
