Hello all. I’m new to the LR3 world having just bought one a week and 500 miles ago. I’m really happy with the truck. It suits me. I looked at and drove everything to have as a bad weather daily driver for Colorado. In the end, while I think the performance of some and reliability of others may be better I chose the LR3 for a several key reasons:

It’s not bland and not everyone has one.

Perfect size for me. Not to big or small

Enough power and a great transmission

Love the sat., cold weather package and in general the way it’s trimmed out.

It is very solid and quiet.

I have several high performance sports cars and a pure track car so the whole high performance SUV track is a bit lost on me. An ML63 has a ton of power but it’s still a pretty heavy and high vehicle. I guess I’m of the school that thinks if you want a uber performance car buy one of the many great sedans or sports cars out there.

Thus far there are only two things I’m mixed on with the LR3:

First, I got a suspension warning that cleared itself. I was in really heavy and wet sloppy snow for 200 miles so it could have been something getting wet or freezing temporarily.

Second, I don’t think I’m as crazy about the snow performance as everybody else is. It’s good but the GY Wranglers appear to be a weak link. I usually drive a Ford Diesel crew cab in horrible weather and maybe my opinions are tainted by that. In truth, by the time you’ve reached the LR3 snow limits the road is closed anyways.

At any rate, glad there is a good LR forums and I’m looking forward to putting miles on the LR3.

Yes, the crapyear wranglers are definitely a weak link. I can't make a good recommendation for snow tires from any personal experience, but it would be hard to do worse from what I hear :)

There was a recent thread on just this topic (driving in snow and ice) here in this forum.

The suspension warning may have been a height sensor being coated with gunk from the snow/salt/dirt/crud you are driving through - not sure.

I think you're right about the build up on the suspension. I'm not tense about it.

I wouldn't put snows on it although the GY's are suspect. They do work well on the road.

The other thing I forgot to say that I love abouthe truck is the lights. It has the lighting package and comes with the best high beams I've ever used. Very nice for those night drives to Lake Powell for those of you that know where that is.

Just wanted to jump in here...

I also am a new LR3 owner (2006 service loaner w/5k miles) and am in the process of moving from CA to the Boulder area...I've been through this board from end to end and keep hoping to see a viable snow tire option since I'm guessing I'll need all I can get for traction in CO...

What sort of traction issues did you run into? Did you change out of the normal terrain mode?

Curious as to what sports cars you have? We've (ok...my wife) has a 2006 911 which is an "always top down, sunny weather only" driver that is just a blast...

Anyway...Thanks for the post!

I was totally screwing around with the truck coming over Berthoud pass in pretty lousy conditions. I used all the modes. the snow one does work best but in the end I switched traction control off and played rally driver. I still wouldn't put pure snows on it. There is plenty of grip in the snow/wet grass mode I just think my diesel has a bunch more grip.

Good news for you is that the LR dealer here in Boulder are good people. I bought my LR3 from them and did the same 5k loaner deal. For me, it just made too much sense.

I've got a pretty full house of sports cars. C6Z06, GT3, Gallardo, 993 RSR full race. My hope is that I'll grow up and get over the car hobby.

I have a C5 Z16 - I really like the new C6's, but they didn't build them for "American sized" people. Though 500hp is worth thinking about cutting off a few inches of leg.... :)

I wouldn't wish for the GT3 too much. It's wicked fun on the track but for everything else your 997 is MUCH better.

I also live in the north Denver area and I have the HSE 19" wheels which I put on the Pirelli Snow and Ice 255/55/19 dedicated snow tires and they are great. The recent blizzards and ice haven't stopped it. Ditch the Goodyears if you are heading up skiing /boarding for sure. These are the first dedicated snow tires I have bought and don't regret it. There isn't a great All-Terrain yet for the 19" wheel, waiting on rumored Goodyear MTR's though.
