FYI--Just saw Pirelli has a new Scorpion Ice & Snow in HSE size 255/55/19 on the Tirerack.com web site, for those in cold climes. Personally, I'm still waiting on the release of the Goodyear MTR to serve both off road and winter purposes.

Generally, mud terrains are pretty crappy in snow, especially hardpack and ice. Not sure but they could be just as bad as the HP's.

You mean the MT/R's may be crappy in snow?

Hmmm....have you looked at the pictures? There is no way that they are as crappy as the HP's.

There is alot of truth to this. Many people believe that an off road tire will preform well in the snow, but the reality is they are not made for winter driving. There are other factors that go into making a good winter tire. check out Nokian Tires for good winter driving.

Houm,
Look at pics of a nokian vs. the MT/R. Notice the thousands of tiny sipes on the nokian. That's what grips the ice. The MT/R has huge lugs which are great for pulling through mud, but the hard surface contact area is pretty much smooth which is no good for packed snow slush and ice. True, they probably aren't as bad as the HP's. Don't get me wrong, I think they are a pretty awesome all around tire, I just didn't want snowbrn to think he was going to go boarding on mt. mckinley on a snowy day.

I hear ya, roverman; and thanks for the clarification.

I think I'm just bitter because there are so few options.
