Hello everyone. Im new to the forum and also to land rovers. I purchased a 96 disco 4.0 with 140K on it(price was right) that suppossedly only needed new head gaskets. Well Im pretty mechanically inclined so the head gasket job was not a huge problem but I cant figure out now why it will start and idle perfect, but as soon as I try to rev the engine past 2000 rpm it misfires and pops. It sounds like a car sounds when the timing is off. I have an obd fault cote detector and it gave me the following codes
P0300, P0125, P0303, P0304, P1316, P1314. Also every idiot light including the srs light is on. Im not sure where to start. If anyone could point me in the right direction to start I would be grateful. I didnt pay much for the disco and the body an interior are in great shape so I dont mind doing the mechanics if I can.
Thanks

Ive done a compression test an I have an average of 145psi except my #3 an #5 clyinders have around 100/110psi. If I put a little oil in those cyl's the comp jumps up to 130psi or so. If anyone could point me in the right direction to start I would be grateful. I didnt pay much for the disco and the body an interior are in great shape so I dont mind doing the mechanics if I can.

Sounds like the sleeves in 3 and 5 have dropped.... time for a rebuild.

Thanks for you response, cylinder sleeves? Would the motor sound normal with that? It dosent tap or anything. I went out this morning and started it and it ran perfect when it was cold, lots of power accelerated nicely then the hotter it got the worse it started running. It will run hot if i let it run long enough. Does dropping a sleeve mean i can rebuild the motor i have or do I just need to get a new motor?
thanks again

If it is a sleeve dropped, which is what it sounds like.... yes it is rebuildable, but as with most thing Rover it will not be cheap.

If it were me I would have this confirmed by a Mechanic... but that is what it sounds like to me.

The Land Rover engine (okay it is a 1960's Buick 215), is aluminum block and aluminum heads... since it will not hold up to heat, they had to put cast iron sleeves, the pistons are of course in the cast sleeves. When the engine overheats, it can cause the sleeve to drop down a bit inside the engine. This of course causes all kinds of odd issues. One of which is not running properly at temp and providing poor compression.

Well your rite then that sounds like what is going on with mine. I just did a compression test again and the # 4 cyl (which is were the head gasket blew) has about 40 or 50psi less than the other cyl's. It runs ok cold but as soon as it heats up it runs like total s###. Guess ill be looking for another short block. Thanks for all your help.
